in grade 9 earth science class, we made a model of the solar system to scale in the school's field. the teacher told us the nearest star other than our sun would be in grand junction which is about 240 miles away (and on the bad side of colorado).

Earth is however, the most dense planet.
And that has nothing to do with the personality of some of those that inhabit it! In Maine somewhere they have a scale model of the solar system. Say the Earth was the size of a small beach ball 1 mile from the sun. Relatively, the inner solar system is pretty close together, and Mars would be the size of a tennis ball about 2 miles away from the sun. Once you get past Mars, your talking like six miles between Jupiter and the Sun, and Pluto is a marble about 40 miles from the sun.
