Diff lock questions??

Hi all

i was wondering if anyone could tell me the benifits of having the diff locked???? ( speed, accleration???) and what is the consequences of having it locked over time????

I ask because i had it locked for a half hour the other day, i found it to launch well, but it slid arond some wet corners, i was just wondering what actually happens?

I was thinking of installing a switch to turn it on and off, can this be done whilst driving???? any concequences???

in my audi 80 quattro it just engaged the rear wheels only... there was a button right by the e-brake...could be different? but it automatically turned back to quattro at like 15mph, i'm sure the subaru doesnt do that.. the only undesirable effect would be rear wheel drive traction and as long as you can easily switch it back, i'm sure its fine....Dont quote me! i'm guessing

It strongly couples the front and rear drivelines. Driving around on asphalt, it puts more stress on the driveline components and tires. Its no good for traction in the corners. During normal cornering, the front wheels are moving at a different speed than the rears. With the center diff locked, this will cause additional traction stresses that will make the front or rear wheels (which ever has the greatest load) to break loose more easily.

Euro Diff lock fuse.

Yes JJ, Mychailo is right it is not for driving around with. It is there for runing the car on a 4 wheel dyno. It applies the Limited Slip Clutch in the center diff, to lock the drive to the front/back together, so it won't shunt on the dyno rollers.

Driving with the fuse in will cause binding, what will cause wheels to break traction to unwind the drive line. Thats why it moves around when cornering, the drive line is trying to unwind. There is no advantage in doing it, it could end up damaging the clutch.

No JJ, its better off with the normal 36front/64rear, than 50/50.
