sporadic accel - fuel filter?
OK, I've recently (like tonight) come to the conclusion that either
a) my fuel filter is clogged b) my fuel pump is on it's way out c) my ECU is toast I sometimes have good high end power, but not often. I just had a former SVX owner friend of mine drive my car and he says my low end power is unaffected, and I have to agree with him. I think it's the filter. Synopsis: a) I have good low-end power b) high end power is f*cked (top speed is now 130mph) c) smog is fine (so no antifreeze being burned) d) oil is fine e) acceleration is mostly flat f) front main seal is slightly leaking g) car almost overheated ONCE; radiator cap fixed that How hard is it to change out the filter? If it's a pain, any problems with moving it further down the fuel line? |

I would start with a fuel filter. It's cheap and an easy install. Just remember to bleed the fuel pressure first or it's a gasoline bath for you.
Fuel pump and or ecu bad are rare. Steve

Remember your engine needs both air and fuel. I would change both the air and fuel filters.
How are the sparkplugs/coils? How does it idle?

Air filter has something like 5k miles on it, but I live on a dirt road so I'll be changing that soon anyway. . . Idles fine around 800 RPM or so . . . spark plugs have 20k miles on them, I'm assuming the coils are fine as I have "the fear" about touching them at all, what with how expensive they are . . . Going to pick up a new fuel filter at work on Saturday and try to install it late next week.
I'm told by a friend of mine that I have to drop the rear transaxle and the gas tank in order to reach the fuel filter. This true? |

Sorry for the delay in getting back, my internet connection had some issues . . . Got the filter changed, took about an hour as the rubber lines were hard and brittle and I had to chip them off the metal lines and buy new ones, etc. . . . It kinda bogged down a bit when I gave it gas after changing the filter, but I reset the ECU and problem solved. Now she runs like a bat out of hell, better even than when I first bought her, which leads me to believe that the filter had NEVER been changed in the life of the car and was extremely clogged. For all interested about how to releave the fuel pressure, look under the back passenger seat cushion and unplug the rectangular plug; this is the fuel pump connector. Then try to start the car (if it starts, let it run until it dies). Don't do what I did and unplug the connector underneath the back seat on the driver's side, as I believe this is for the power antenna; you'll be waiting a long while for the car to die in this case.
Not a hard thing to do, something like a 3 or 4 out of 10, just don't smoke when you change this filter. |
