bye bye tranny

ok... i'll go over what has happened in the last 2 weeks, and you guys tell me what i should do....

2 weeks ago i felt the trannty slipping.... going fine in 3rd then rpms shoot up......

brought it to a tranny shop, they drained the pan and replaced all the fluid (no flush)

for a week, the car drove fine. over the weekend, i took a day trip, and on the way there, tranny wouldnt get out of 2nd gear for a few minutes, but then it would work fine, with 2nd gear banging slightly into third.......

on the way back, the car wouldn't go past third gear....

so, this morning, i bring it back to the shop, and on the way there, it won't get out of 2nd gear!!!

tranny shop wants to do a remove and rebuild, using subaru parts for a cost of around $2500........

i told them to give me a few days to ponder, then the guy calls me an hour later and says he thinks it may be an electrical problem.......

the tranny has about 20 - 25,000 miles on it, and i wasn't anticipating replacing it so soon......

HELP!!!!!!!!

btw, i would love to do a 5 speed swap, but it would have to be done at a shop, or at the very least, someone other than me...

anyone have any ideas of how i should deal with this?

would it be the same price for a swap, if i do need a new trann? (that was my plan all along, to put a 5 speed in after the tranny fails)

sorry for the length of this, im not a "car guy" and i need some help... thanks!!!!!

kris

I'm not 100% sure of this but i think the 5 spd swap might actually be cheaper than auto. Its hard to find a shop that will be willing to do it. Many people here have done the swap so im sure they will be able to tell you what you need to know. Do you have another car or is the SVX your daily driver?

DAILY DRIVER

it is my daily driver, but i could do without it for as long as it takes to do a swap.... does anyone know of any shops in ny that'll do a swap?

also.... could this really just be an electrical problem at this point?

You could try Lee Miles transmission specialists. There are alot of transmission shops in yonkers, bronx, queens, any of those areas.

Your car is in limp home mode. plug everything back in and pull the tranny codes. There is a failed electrical part somewhere.

Tranny codes can be pulled if the problem is electronic (power light flashing 16 time on startup).

See the method on http://svx-iw.com/ (click codes)

I think that the transmission has lost the high clutch. Does the ATF smell burnt?

When the high clutch fails, it will start to slip in 4th, as it has the highest load in this gear. It only has to slip in this gear for a short time, before it will then slip in third.

The TCU can't cause the transmission to just slip, instead of engaging. It will either engage the gear or not, it wont make it slip and rev instead. If the TCU has electrical problems, it will defualt to only engaging third gear.

From your description, it now will only start in first, shift into second, but won't go into third or fourth. The high clutch has to hold to get third and top.
