jolt when shifting; torque converter?

Almost every time my 92 LSL shifts it either clunks or the car jolts. I just had the tranny replaced about 5k miles ago; this is a fairly recent problem. My first thought is the torque converter, which I don't believe was replaced when the tranny was. There are no spikes in RPMs when this happens, and all fluid levels are within specs as far as I am able to determine. Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem on a 1 - 2 gear shift in the 1.5k to 2.5k RPM range. No spike in RPMs while shifting, I just always get a "clunk clunk." I've been told that it could be the tranny/motor mounts. Unfortunately, I don't know how to check them. The last that I heard, another member (tomssvx) was going to try to fix his exact same problem by changing out the mounts. Personally, I've had the problem for about 12k miles without any large issues. Hasn't gotten worse, but hasn't gotten better.

Your symptoms are obviously a little worse than mine. However, it does sound as though you are experiencing "weight movement" upon shifting. This is a somewhat common term to describe the clunking, and usually means sometype of mount problem.

As Deruvian said, it is more likely to be the transmission moving on it's mounts. Though you could check to see if the dropping resistor, behind the battery is plugged together. I would not worry about the torque converter, causing the trouble.

Though I am suprised that the torque converter was not included in the overhaul, as it was the torque converter lock-up clutch linings, that blocked the cooler with debri, in the first place on most of the early models. I think it would be best to check with them to see if it was done.

The mount is made of two cradle-shaped pieces of metal with two rubber bumpers molded between them. When the rubber cracks and separates from the metal the tranny can move around a little.

I think that's likely your problem.

It's not too terribly intensive to replace the mount, but the exhaust does have to come out.
