Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Meanwhile, in California...

Well, today was a milestone day for my SVX. I finally took it to get smogged, and it passed this time!! It didn't really fail last time, but the smog machine kept going crazy when trying to read the RPMs and they couldn't do the test. This time there wasn't a problem, although I did notice they gave up on the inductive RPM meter and used a wired one.

After a successful smog check, I made a trip to the DMV and an hour a bit later had new tags! So I'm finally road legal (1.5 years later...)! Still lots of things left to fix on this car, but nice to get the paper work out of the way - hopefully I'll be more motivated to get the other work out of the way (transmission error code, another wheel baring, 120K tune up, brakes, new tires, etc.).

Cheers!
Ian.

Glad you got it on the road, will definitely help keep you motivated to fix the other issues!

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I've had my SVX less than a week and yesterday I began working on little nuisance stuff that i wanted to get out of the way first. All the windows worked except the passenger side. It wouldn't go up with the passenger or driver's side switch. After a decent amount of troubleshooting i discovered that the contacts in both switches were worn to a point that didn't allow contact. My fix? A little piece of a plastic cherry coke bottle and some epoxy. I attached the coke bottle plastic piece (approx 3mm x 5mm) to the copper band that is actuated by the switch lever. This allowed for the lever to push it down that little extra travel and make contact. Problem Solved! Price - $0 if you don't count the little bit of epoxy.

Also found that the ignition switch was loose and wobbling around in the column. After taking all the covers off I discovered the 2 factory bolts that have no head on them had backed all the way out and were laying inside one of the covers. I used 2 M8 x 1.25 Button head cap screws 12mm long and grinded the head down to 11mm diameter. Add some blue loctite and my switch is now stable.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Made an appointment a couple of days ago to get the rust spot on the sun roof fixed and painted. Well, warm sunny day here today so detailed the SVX and took it up to the body shop then left the key in the key drop for tomorrow's appointment.

Great way to spend a spring day while on Covid lock down.

All parks, trails, public spaces are closed here and it's illegal for more than 5 people to gather. If you're caught in a park etc there are pretty hefty fines. If you drove to one then left your car in the lot, police will tow and impound it. Restaurants & bars are also closed.

We can still move about but are encouraged not to.

Couldn't be a better time to get some work done on the car.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I opened up the tempo garage to check on the SVX. I realized that somehow the passenger side door had been left ajar and the battery was dead. After charging the battery for 8 hours I got in and turned the key to start and the engine sprang to life in a millisecond. It hadn't been started since November. A new battery is a likelihood but such is life. It's got to be at least 7 years old.
Since they were calling for heavy rain all day I pulled it out and let Mother Nature rinse off all of winters grime (and 1,000 cat paw prints).

Just a bath to start with. It's a 97 Bordeaux Pearl in very good shape, Just over 111,000 k with a former life in a garage. Service records drop off quite a few years back so documenting it's needs which will be the 120k full service, replace the CV axles, one is making noise, do 2 while you're at it, and update the battery. Dare I should mention, seeking out the other gremlins known to haunt these fine auto's

I've been running mine up and down Rt 83 as my work commuter lately. No traffic due to the crisis, so it has been the silver lining to some "Essential Employee" days.

Also, I just completed an oil change. New air filter.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I swapped out my alternator today.
Had Christmas lights on the dashboard yesterday, then the car cut out on 83 North.

Put in the alternator, and i'm all set.[URL="https://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=20057&d=1587267648"]

Just curious, did you have the old one bench tested at an autoparts store to verify output?

I did not, but the old one is still in my trunk for core. I’ll ask.

As it is; the car is back to normal (no dash errors) and battery is now charging again with the new alternator.

UPDATE: When I went to turn in the core, I asked for a bench test. They said they couldn't do it right now due to covid; but could get to it later yada yada yada. I got my core charge refund and left. LOL. Damn covid.

Bought a pair of these, along with a pair of planted brackets. Won't be delivered until early June.

A bit up in the years for that. Strictly limited to early Sunday morning blasts down country lanes, scaring the sheep and waking the worshippers.
