Obd I Scanner
I am interested in buying a OBD I trouble code scanner. What is the best brand to buy and what will work with my 95 svx?
I viewed some past threads, but not sure who to buy from or what the ideal scanner model number is. I'm sure I don't need anything too fancy. I know a lot of members have there own scanners. Can anyone list what they prefer? Much appreciated. |

I guess, let me rephrase the question?....Cuz I'm confused.....Do I need to buy an OBD-II scanner and get an OBD-I cable for it?...I've checked some websites and I do not see the OBD-I for foreign vehicles.

i believe you only have obd1 or obd 2 if you have 1. Then there should be no plug underneath the steering wheel, and you can pull the codes according to the how to. The wires and connetor are behind the kick panel on the driverside. If you have obd2 then there will be a connector there you should just be able to plug right into.

You can get nice OBD-II code readers at auto parts stores for about $150. At least, that's what I paid for mine. Admittedly, that was a couple years ago. Those readers work on any OBD-II cars.
Now, the funny thing about OBD-I, as I understand it, is that it's not really a standard. Every manufacturer had their own proprietary standard, and none are compatible with eachother. The only way to get a 'reader' for the SVX is to buy a 'Subaru Select Monitor' and the cartridge for the right car. These suckers are expensive. I hope to get one for myself someday, but they're hard to find. But we do have, on this site somewhere, directions for getting the car to tell you what codes it's storing and erase them when you fix the problem. It involves jumping some wires in a connector in the driver's side kick panel, but the connector and wires are all provided for you on the car. You read the codes by counting the number of times the 'check engine' light flashes. So do a search. It might be in our 'how to' folder. Good luck!
