Subaru EG33 hammers all competitors

In past races we were blowing away our class so badly that we decided to voluntarily move up one class for the 2018 racing season. Crying and whining from a pilot in the next class started because he knew that we would crush that class. The Race Director asked if we would move up two classes … we agreed.
The Memorial Air Race was held at Terrell Texas this last weekend. 34 aircraft ran in this race. We sliced and diced every one of them. Our speed was 32MPH faster than the second place entrant!
I must admit none of the 270+ MPH guys showed up for this race.
I love this little 202 cubic inch Subaru engine.

How are classes determined?[/QUOTE]

Generally the classes are divided into Experimental (such as mine), Certified and Military. Those are further split by Fixed or Retractable landing gear, Turbo or Normal aspirated, lastly by size of the engine.

Oh, nice. Looks great...but the throttle body looks like aftermarket.

So, these engines are installed backwards on planes?

The throttle body is original EG33, you can't see it in the photo, it is on the back side of the PSRU (transmission). The black part you see is the original EG33 airflow sensor.

How is it cooled? I can't see the radiator.

Blacky, the radiator is behind the seat. If you are familiar the P51 Mustang from World War II, the cooling design is a close copy of that aircraft. I did make a few aerodynamic changes for airflow improvements. See the photo.

Loving reading your posts. Maybe I missed it but, what do you use for an ECU?

bwb3, the ECU is also stock Subaru EG33. Much of the brain power of the ECU is unused, I don't need all the car inputs that are unnecessary in an airplane such as backup lights. BTW I have no oxygen sensors … avgas has lead in it and will foul the sensors. Since the ECU has no O2 input it just reverts to a lookup table for adjustments. Russell Sherwood

Very useful information. I have a spare low mileage EG33 which I'd love to put in my boat. There's now one less thing to worry about.

Re: Subaru EG33 hammers all competitors

Just curious, did you look into the EZ30 engine before selecting the EG33? I only ask because the EZ is much lighter and more compact with a similar power level. Was there a massive benefit to the EG?

PS I have to say, if an SVX engine is gonna go into something other than an SVX, this is how it should be done. Awesome job.
