5 speed install questions

I am going to swap motors in my SVX. My thought is to install the 5 speed on the new engine and install drivetrain as one unit.

A few questions:
Do I need a new starter? I saw a post where someone was selling their starter after converting to a 5 speed.

What is with the component driveshaft? Is that something that only the manual cars (non-SVX) have or do some SVXs have the component driveshaft? How do I tell visually if I am buying a component shaft or not?

Does the Legacy rear differential bolt in place of the SVX differential or do I need to open it up and swap gears from one unit to the other?

Do the front axles from the SVX fit into the Legacy Tranny? Do they need to be lengthened/shortened?

Where is a good place to get a good quality clutch and pressure plate?

Thanks in advance since this will be need to be finished in time for Reading!!!

Doug

REad my "How-To" in the "How-to" locker, I believe it answers all you questions.

How you tell if you have the component drive shaft is, it has a bolt in rear section(can be unbolted right behind the carrier bearing) where some have it and some have the one that is crimped together behind the carrier bearing.

Thanks Huck. I read your "how-to" many times and even printed it out and read it many times more.

I still don't know if the engine and tranny can be removed and installed as a single unit.

Hey Doug,
I haven't tried pulling them out together, but am fairly sure it is do-able, as I'm sure they are put in that way at the factory.

Although the manual tranny won't have anything to set on till you put it in and modify the cross-member.

Really not bad to put in from underneath, as it just bolts up without any mods. It's much lighter than the auto tranny is, and more compact to.

The time consuming parts are the things that have to be modified, such as the pedals, shifter, drive shaft and cross member.

If you have all the parts handy, you could have the old tranny out and the manual tranny in, in an afternoon, but then you have to make all the mods to make it fuctional which takes a little more time.

Thanks Huck. You give me confidence in attacking this myself. I am looking forward to this project.

I have a feeling that fitting the clutch master cylinder will be a ton easier with no engine in the way

What I will probably do is perform the engine & tranny swap one weekend, then take my careful measurements for the driveshaft and drop that off Monday, pick up Friday and go finish it the following weekend.

The front section of the drive shaft needs to be lengthened 2", but my local shops coundn't put mine in a lathe because it wasn't the "bolt together kind"
So I'd check that out first.

TONS of room, my mechanic did it this way to check everything out and do a ton of the seals. Just make sure you have tons of jacks to support while you are getting everything ready to pull. Did i mention my mechanic loves me for all the buisness i give him on the side?
