hurricane Jeanne damage update
I don't yet have contracts for all the things that got messed up by hurricane Jeanne (so I can't say to actual costs yet), but on Saturday I did get the official estimate from State Farm's adjuster on what they think it will take to make the repairs....drum roll please...
$43,268.26 Now one might argue about their accuracy, but as an engineer/physicist, I admire their precision Here's the bad news that I think most married guys can relate to...I figure I'll have to put out probably another $15-20K of my own money (can you spell "home equity loan") because: a) I'm replacing a shingle roof with a Galvalume metal roof (wind rating at 140mph vice 70mph), which is a $10K add-on by itself, and b) My wife is highly unlikely to replace carpet/drywall, etc in one room and do nothing to the adjoining room. |

Good gosh Lee! The roof improvement sounds like a must-have in hurricane country.
Glad you got the 4.11 swap out of the way... -Chike

Sorry to hear about your loss. But your improved roof should pay for itself in lower insurance premiums, we all know how insurers reward those that take such measures.
Mom & Pop fared well in Vero. Pop replaced a couple squares of shingles, trimmed some trees and laid some eighty pieces of sod - damaged from debris laying on it while hiding out up here. They were extremely lucky.

Glad I didn't take you up on winning that bet Lee. Looks like you will need every buck you can spare.
Still hope to get down that way before Christmas; maybe we can get together. Don

Don, Always welcome. Might even have the exterior of my house fixed by then...roofing company (first in the critical path) says they "expect" to be out here week after next.

Just leave the roof off, Lee. It'll make Don feel right at home.

Open spaces
Ron,
My interest in astronomy began as I observed the stars through the holes in the roof. Hasn't been as interesting ever since we patched it. Drier though. Don

sad to dreg this up from the past, but the roofing company is finally coming out tomorrow morning (Thursday 20 Jan 05) - at least that's what the message on my answering machine says.
What's happened since the last posting: My wife and I fixed our fence using lots of labor and a few bucks for 5 new posts. My wife and I put up a new shed with lots of labor and about $900 in materials (but still needs siding). Two improvements were made - I've got both 120 & 220 Volt service out there, and I went from a 8X12 to a 10X14 building (metal roof, soon to be vinyl siding, two windows, and a sliding vinyl pocket door). FlameTech (local fireplace company) put on a new chimney cap to the tune of $1,048.88 |

Man, Lee, I'm sorry you're still recovering. My mom is, too. She and my stepdad live on a farm, and there's simply no way to describe the pile of trees they had to remove because they were either damaged or not whre they were the day before. The pile is definitely house-sized. At least two stories. Tree removal cost $5000 alone, and that was a steal. Most companies wanted a grand a tree, in which case it would have run into the tens of thousands.
The roof on one of her buildings alone took $20,000 of damage.

At least you're building your home better than it was before. Kinda like the 6 million dollar man.
Good luck! |
