Re: Intermittent A/C

Anyone have a leak? How did you fix it. Icingdeath suggested o rings . Anyone else have success with that? How many people have replaced compressors? Are they known to fail often?

Re: Intermittent A/C

mine was low when i got the car so i sucked it out replaced all the o-rings and receiver/drier (which you do any time you open the system) and it's held a charge for several years now. compressors aren't really likely to fail unless they are not run enough or run when the refrigerant level is too low.

Re: Intermittent A/C

I am currently having issues just like you are with the AC. There is a way to bypass the safety shut off for overpress/underpressure. You unplug the compressor wire and either power it or ground it, (cant remember I did that last summer) but it will turn the clutch for the AC pump on so you can run the system.

Wiggle any hose connection on the AC system. This is how I found my leaky O-rings. Even though the bolts were tight on the highside pressure line to the pump, the oring would leak if any side pressure occured on the fitting (so when I would hit the gas, the engine TQ would move everything enough that the oring would start leaking.

They sell Dye kits for AC, sometimes thats the only way to find small leaks in the systems.

Re: Intermittent A/C

theres 2 on the compressor where the low and high temp hoses connect, one on the driverside of the condensor, and 2 on the dryer beside the ABS.

Re: Intermittent A/C

NAPA#208696 Receiver dryer comes with o rings...$16.86 perfect fit...unlike the o=ring kits...I bought a 250 pc kit of HBNR from Harbor freight, none were perfect size, cost was about $14...If you can get to a dealer, you will save money and get a perfect fit...

Re: Intermittent A/C

What gaskets am I asking for ? Are they hard to change? I never worked on an AC, looks complicated. What are the chances I do all this and find out it is the compressor? I will have to check out those spots you mention . This is all Greek to me. This AC worked perfect 3mo ago.

Re: Intermittent A/C

Old thread, I know.

Can anyone tell me if a condenser from 93 - 97 will fit my 92?

Re: Intermittent A/C

I believe they are the same from looking at my '92 and '97. The only difference is the '92 used R12. That won't matter because it will be empty anyway.
When I got my used one I blew it out with compressed air.

Re: Intermittent A/C

I would recommend a new dryer before you recharge the system. About a $150.

I think you added a zero, they're $15.00. I bought 2 last year.

Re: Intermittent A/C

Got a new drier when I had my compressor rebuilt. $18.00. My system seems to have some black film in it which is why I'm looking for a new condenser. Local shop didn't think methyl/nitrogen flush was reliable even though they do it if requested.
