Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

That settles it, my car is getting a hidden kill switch, among other things. Would be ironic if I caught some Russian dudes trying to steal my car, since the firearm I would most likely be wielding when I confronted them is Russian :-)

Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

I pull out my fusible link when I have to park on the street when I go into Boston. However, it is very rare that I park on the street. $5 to feed a meter and risk getting sideswiped by a taxi cab or $20 and park in a very nice, well lit garage under Boston Common... I take the garage every single time.

Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

Howdy all,

A kill switch is easy to install. But if you make it easy to use, then it is also easier to find. If you make it difficult to use, even just a little annoying, then you may get into the habit of not using it. So, where do you mount a kill switch that is easy to install, easy to use and not likely to be found by a determined car thief with 5 minutes (a long time) to look for it? A private reply would probably be best.

TIA Chip.

Naturally, having such a large community of Russians/Ukranians here, I have many friends/acquaintances within that community. And to be honest, I have heard some disturbing stories, but never first hand accounts, just 3rd or 4th person. nonetheless, I have asked some of my friends within that community to keep an eye out.

I know, as a matter of fact, there is a link/network between the communities here in Spokane and communities in Oregon, Portland in particular. So I have been keeping an eye on all the craigslists in Oregon, Washington and Montana. It wouldn't surprise me if there is some network that stretched the entire west cost.

Changing ideas a bit here.... How hard is it to hot wire a car? is this something your normal drug addict could do?

and how about getting a key. can you, for instance go to a locksmith with a VIN number and ask for a key to be made?
Send me some pics and pm's, we have the russian shop south of town here. Missoula is just far enough.

Every time I have gone into a dealership for a key here, they will not cut a key unless I have the registration and Id to go with it. I don't care, and feel a lot better that they do that around here.

My dealership wasn't even able to cut it by VIN as mine wasn't on record anymore. had to come back with the key w/keycode.

Walmart will cut pretty much any key. I had a new key cut there and just gave them my old one and said make a copy of this key no questions asked and they cut it.

Yeah, I only got one key when I got my Svx and it was very very worn so I wanted one that was cut to original and then got a copy from wal-mart as well.

Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

I had someone break into my SVX about 6 months ago when I still had her. I'm about 2 hours from Spokane, It seems that it happened several times as well. I'm just going to guess that the thefts are mostly unrelated and have more to do with a car that is rare and sporty. Just looks fun, so why not try and take it.

Sorry to hear about this man, and hopefully you get it back.

You hide it in plain view where nobody will suspect what it is.

Get a proper SVX switch and put it in an unused stock location so that it looks like it is supposed to be there. For example, European SVXes have heated seat switches in the area occupied by the coin holder on a USA car. You could maybe get a switch from a European breaker and put it in there. Or you could just use a USA parking light switch.

My old vauxhall got broken into and hot-wired but they didn't manage to take it because I had connected the foglight switch to the ECU power supply. The car wasn't fitted with foglights.

Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

You might want to check this guy out:

http://motors.shop.ebay.com/merchant/12121_drozd

Hes selling almost everything off a white 92, it doesnt look like hes parting out from engine or body damage. Hes listed in NJ, but you can put whatever you want for your location. Maybe check out some of his previous buyers and see exactly where their items were shipped from.

Yeah, wow. Looks like he just took a random car and started selling parts..

Looks like it's an 'L' model due to the seats..
