A/C Help

About 2 years ago my compressor went out, and I ordered one of the remanufactured ones on ebay, but have just gotten around to putting it on the car. I just got my new drier today. I noticed on the top of the drier on the things that plug the holes it says "R134A," but I have not converted and still have R12, will this be a problem?

Once I install the drier and put the new belt on, I'm going to take it to an A/C shop. What needs to be done exactly to ensure longevity of the system? Just a flush, vacuum, and charge? Or is there anything else. Remember that the system has been open for two years. Will the seals and orings still be good?Any ideas on how much this might cost?

Ideas/comments?

Thanks
Caleb

They'll install a conversion kit, as R12 isn't available anymore. They'll also pull a vacuum on the system prior to filling it to make sure the system doesn't have any leaks.

Chances are that you guys already are aware of this product but there is stuff out there (leak sealer and the cold stuff) that you can do your self. We did it our self and it worked well didn't have to change anything. We just need to by the hose that connects the can to your car. It was pretty cheap. Just thaught i would add my two cents.

Are you referring to RedTek?

I've tried it and it didn't last. I changed all the o-rings, replaced drier, vacuumed, oiled and added actual R134. Works awesome.

isn't R134 the illegal stuff. I beleive we put in DuraCool, It didn't last the a/c would turn on and off every min or so after a while. The A/C people could only find some small holes in the compressor. So we just figured we need a new compressor, but maybe it was jsut the stuff we put in.

Oh ok, yeah its sort of comming back to me now. We didn't put the other stuff in because we didn't want to replace parts, we wanted to use something that will work with what we had.

So for the upgrade what needs to be done? Just a change of orings? What else, flush, etc...?

Would it be a bad idea to install the belt before the system is ready because if I install the belt myself I could save on some labor prices, but would it be bad to drive the car with the belt on?

Here is a great web-site to troubleshoot A/C problems; WWW.aa1car.com/library/ac98.htm:)

Where can I get the needed orings to do the conversion without buying one of the "do-it-yourself" kits? Does anyone know roughly how much shops charge to flush/vacuum/charge?

How necessary is it to change the orings and do I need an inline filter even if I get a flush? It is a new compressor so the oil is ready for 134. Will a flush/vacuum and charge be sufficient to ensure a lasting system. I just don't want it failing again...

We didn't do anything but drain/charge with nitrogen to test for leaks, and then draint eh nitrogen and charge with r134a. no leaks.

you can still buy r12, but you need to be licensed. it's just a test that you need to take and they give you a little card... and the stuff is expensive, as well. about 20-25 bucks a can.

The R12 o-rings are not suitable for R134. You can do it right the first time or do it again. It's up to you.
