The marks on the belt will travel around a few rotations, then line up with the pulley marks again, won't they?

Harvey.

Correct, but its more than a few rotations. Its something like 50-100 rotations.

Yes I was guessing,

No of teeth on belt divided by 25 teeth on sproket = X times.?

Harvey.

I was hoping it would only be a few rotations. :-) I wanted to if my old timing belt was properly aligned before removing it. Worked up a pretty good sweat cranking the engine until all the timing marks were lined up.

Yes you should try lining up the marks on the bevel gears on a Desmo Ducati, the whole 7 of them.

Harvey.

Actually it would be # of teeth on sproket multiplied by the # of teeth on the belt divided by the largest common divisor of the 2.

That would be the # of teeth until all the marks lined up again.

As for engine revolutions take the # of teeth on the belt and divide by the largest common divisor between the # of teeth on the belt and sproket.
