Looking at another one!

Someone locally is selling a 93 Pearlie AWD with leather and moonroof. It has 142k miles. I haven't seen it yet, but he says it runs perfectly, has a rebuilt transmission, great tires, gray interior, perfect paint with a few tiny door dings, no radio, and needs a right front CV axle, rear brake pads, and a power steering rack. he is asking $2800. I know what brakes and axles will cost me. What is involved in replacing a PS rack?

I highly doubt its a 93 pearlie... since all 93s are supposedly the anniversary edition and all are Bacelona Red... was it a mistype?

I agree with Chris - if it was indeed a '93 SVX, and not Barcelona Red, it'd be the only one I've ever heard of.

Anyway, $2800 sounds like a decent enough deal to me. Still, offer him $2400 or less, and see where that gets you. If the repairs turn out to be really expensive, then at least you have a parts car.

Thanks Chris,
I'll bet it is a late production '92. I still need to know about the PS rack? Anyone?

PS Rack

Well, I recently had my steering rack replaced. I got a remanufactured unit for $290 and paid for a couple hours of labor. If the lines connected to the rack are also damaged or happen to be rusted out, that can run you a few hundred more.

Thanks again. I guess I can figure on spending around $500 to fix the streering if I am lucky plus another $500 for brakes and axles.

If you do not know how to do the brake pads yourself, let me know, its VERY simple. Rotors are easy as well, and the pads, depending on what you buy can go from $30-90 a set for BOTH rear brakes. If it needs just one cv axle, remember my mechanic removed, had rebuilt, and re-installed in the period of 1 work day for around $204.00. So for the axle and brakes alone, you could say no more that $300.00.

Its the P/S Rack that concerns me, that could get pricey.

Yeah, the rack can be more money, especially if it is difficult to remove. It will also depend what shop you take it to. Also, a couple of the lines that run to the rack are VERY difficult to find, unless you know someone with a parts car. When I called about one of them, there was not a single new part in the entire country. Get up under the car and inspect the quality of the general area. If the pipes that connect to the rack are very rusted, the car is in for an expensive repair.

Anyway, if you are mechanically inclined, you could probably do the repairs yourself. Of course, this is just a guess, because I am not, myself.

No, I am not mechanically inclined enough to attempt a PS rack replacement. Thanks for the advice. If and when it stops raining, I will try to get a view of the rack and the area around it. That's the part that scares me about this car. He had it for sell for $3500 a few weeks ago and there were no takers. Now he's asking $2800. I fear the repairs may tempt me to wait for something better. Hope to inspect it this weekend.
