I have a question for those of you who have the factory service manual set. I just got mine. Since they're so nice and new and clean, my first impulse is to leave them in the house where they can stay that way and photocopy the pages I'll need for the repair I'm attempting.

What does everyone else do?

I have made some working copies and now the engine book is falling apart. I am going to need a binder.

The first time I used mine, I used them at the car where I was working. Got dirty of course. I think it will make copies of it when I know that there will be a good chance of getting it dirty. If it is electrical which is more clean, it would not be as important.

A third option could have been that I use them in the shop, but try to keep them as clean as possible.

Hi everybody!

Where can I get a factory service manual set?

Is this a document from Subaru or a book commercialy available at specialty bookstores?

I am also trying to find a User manual in English because mine will be in German! (I am still waiting my yellowsub )
Where can I get one?

Regarding usage of these documents I would definitely take copies and put it into a binder with the paper sheets inside plastic covers.

You can pour any kind of grease on it and use it without hesitations and easily clean it at the end of the day.

You can only get the FSMs through a Subaru dealer. www.subaruparts.com or www.1stsubaruparts.com likely offer much better prices than your local dealer.

While I'm inclined to photocopy the books and put the copies in binders, I wouldn't put each sheet in page protectors. We're talking about a set of manuals printed on full-size pages and stacked six inches high. Page protectors would make the set fill a shelf.

You might want to post an inquiry in the european forum here. You'll be wanting a euro spec FSM not a USA spec.

Thanks for the tips for buying the manuals.

I realy didn'y know how thick that thing was.

I will be submitting my request on the Euro forum although I think that, besides probably some changes in the engine management because of CO emissions levels, most of it is practically the same specs.

FSM, left or right?

Hi Tone

Good to see you are still in the frame, and your car is coming.

I have the US version manuals, and I am happy with them, but a number of things are different.

First, US spec cars are all lhd, but this would suit you on the continent.

Second, there are some pretty solid differences.
[1] The US car has a different security system.
[2]The US car has loads of info on automatic seat belts, which give trouble. Never seen these on Euro cars.
[3] The US car has a different function for the FWD fuse. Mine is JDM spec, and putting in this fuse locks the diffs, rather than turning the car into front wheel drive.
[4] The reason for #3 is the US car has a different rear drive mechanism at the rear of the tranny. Japanese, Aussie, English and Euro cars have a different full-blown AWD box. This is explained in detail on a post by Ob-au.

But as you say, 99.9% of the information is correct.

Jamsvx in Australia can get English FSMs as per the Oz market for a very cheap price. If you can not get a Euro spec manual in English for your yellowsub, then the Australian one is the next best bet, closest to the mechanical spec. Also, the price for a full five year set will be as cheap or cheaper than the basic 92 US manual without the yearly updates.

99.9% what?

Be careful if your using the manual in the troubleshooting section - It has several typo type errors which are not all obvious when doing detailed voltage and resistance checks of specific circuits! [See "Manual MANIA" in this forum recently].

It's generally very handy tho. My originals plus supplements cost almost $200. from the dealer.

P.S. I like to copy the few pages I'm working with for the garage and then use the main manuals as references inside the house, otherwise they can get too dirty.
