Stop Lamp Warning Light

The stop lamp warning light has been coming on sometimes when the brake is applied. I checked the bulbs and the bulbs are fine, at the time the warning light was not on. ???

This was happening to me also. The fault on mine was fluid level in the reservoir. It looked OK on the outside. However, there is a float switch on the inside, this was sticking a bit, just low enough to turn on the light. Did it mostly in the morning till the brake fluid heated up, and presumably expanded a bit.

BTW commuter, if this is the problem, check your flexible brake pipes. One of mine had a weeping leak which caused the low level.

Joe this is the other "brake lamp" light not the "brake" light. I never saw this one before it came on. It comes on when a stop bulb burns out.

Just replace the bulbs. If the light is coming on, one of the bulbs are on the way out. It may be working intermittently. Its a small cost to replace all four bulbs.

Supposedly the "stop Lamp" comes on when you burn out 1 bulb and stays lit. However, if you burn out a second bulb, tha "Stop Lamp" goes out.

Another common problem is the stop lamp checker relay. This is located in theright side in the trunk, behind the panel, in front of the washer fluid reservoir. The design is such that if moisture gets into this area the checker relay acts as a reservoir to collect and hold water. This was my problem.

Check the bulbs first. The relay is a simple 1 plug/1 screw operation. Cost of the part is about $38.00.

Next time that happens, pull over and have someone step on the pedal, or place something on top of it (a heavy book?) and see which bulb is going out. Had some problem; sometimes the light would come on so I replaced that bulb and it's been fine.

I can do a perm. fix for you. Send me your current lights at the back with 500 bucks. I will put LEDs in them. Not the cheap 15 bucks with 5 LEDs either.

stop light bulbs.

The stop light warning system measures the amount of current that flows to the stop light bulbs. As the bulbs age the filament erodes away, this raises the resistance so less current flows. Try renewing the bulbs.

Harvey.

I guess you have not seen the LED taillights on the SVXes yet. At least the 2 prototype LEDS taillight SVXes...

These things are bright enought to light up a cityblock. And I kid you not.
