Tps Issue?

Did search for "converter and unlocking"
Only saw two threads that seemed to match my problem but not much in way of conformation.......

Converter locks up normally in about 15min. of driving secondary roads but starts unlocking after another 15min. or so on highway.

Has been very cold, tranny temp dropping on highway or TPS?

Mine's been acting the same way. I "think" it's normal. First of all, the car won't even go into 4th gear until tranny temp has reached 50 degrees. TC Lockup occurs at 52 degrees (F). I'm not sure, but, I'm guessing that temp is the issue. It was 35 degrees this morning and things went back to "normal." In other words, I didn't have to drive five miles before 4th gear kicked in and I didn't have that "searching" feeling with the TC. Temps had been teens to single digits the past few days.

Anyone else?

By chance does it happen with the cruise control on? My beater SVX would not hold the lock-up (except on ABSOLUTELY flat ground) using cruise control but was fine w/ cruise control off. Since my beater has a 5 spd now, the cruise control works fine... maybe TCU??? Just a guess.

Does it both with and without cruise on.

Need a good 50 degree day and a longer drive somewhere.

I would bet it is just tranny temp - normal in cold weather if you have added an aftermarket tranny cooler and bypassed stock cooler. If you are running through the stock cooler then you do have a problem.

Mine's running through the stock cooler, however, I have a new radiator (not the 92 with the mesh) and a Suby Rerman tranny that was put in about a year ago. Also, it was 44 degrees when I left work today. Didn't pull any of the "stunts" it had been pulling in the single and teens, temperatures.

Hot'n'cold

Guys

It is sure to be the temperature. Remember it is designed to do this to keep your ATF at the correct operating range. When lock-up drops off on the highway, it is bringing the Torque Convertor back into play. This will tend to add heat to the oil, in theory could bring it up to the value where lockup will happen again.

In practise, driving at low revs in a high gear on the highway, your cooler/s will be losing this extra heat to the low ambient at the rad, so you will not achieve lockup till the air temp rises enough.

Joe

Yep, I have a cooler and notice that it unlocks the TC more often in the cold than in the warmer weather. I believe it's normal and the tranny is only trying to keep the ATF fluid at the proper temperature.

Yeah. What Joe and Mike said.

Of course, given that A) This is the first Autobox many of us have driven in years; B) The Suby Autobox has some unique characteristics that (probably) the last autobox we drove didn't have, and; C) SVX Transmission Horror Stories abound . . . you can't blame him for being just a tad bit paranoid.

I've had to develop somewhat of a "comfort" philosophy: "Take care of her . . . drive her 'til she won't go no more . . . fix her . . . take care of her . . . drive her 'til she won't go no more . . . fix her . . . take care of her . . .

I'm lucky I have in excess of 500K miles of AT driving Only owned a stick for 6 months and 10K miles, and that was my XT6 with a 6 puck copper clutch and upgraded pressure plate.

I drove AT from 73 - 77. Then, stick from 77-99. There was a short stint from 77-99 that I drove AT occasionally in my Peugeot 505 STi, but, rarely.

I thought TC lockup was at 160F? I think the 50F is either second or third gear, depending on who's version of version of SVX gearing you subscribe to. Since adding the second tranny cooler, my TC never locks up when its below 40F outside, even after a 30 minute commute because the fluid temp never gets past 160F.

Perhaps the info I got from the service manual is wrong. I dunno.
