any way to get my headlight covers to not look yellow

looking at almost all of the pictures that I've seen on this site, none of the headlight covers look as yellow or cloudy as mine. This has been bugging me secretly in the back of my mind, but I just pushed it back as I know many cars come like this normally. Now I see this is not the case. I can't really afford to buy new ones, (saving up for my 2nd set of wheel bearings in the last 30,000 miles) so is there anything that can be done to mine?

Great info, but one more question.

Quote:
Now, use a heavy cut plastic cleaner and clean the outside. Repeat for medium and light cut as well.
I've never heard of a heavy cut plastic cleaner. Is this something I could pick up at walmart tonight? (if you don't have any in your area it's like a bigger better kmart or target that stays open 24/7)

I'd love to get this done now. (don't have to wake up tomorrow till 4:30pm )

People on the board use Novus plastic cleaner. I use 3M plastic cleaner... You will find heavy, medium and fine cut if you look for those brands--- Under car care section.

I was quite pleased with the results from using Dupont Clear Coat Polish/Cleaner. Comes in only one strength and took about 3 minutes per lens.

It's lasted 3.5 months so far, and I didn't have to disassemble anything.

I just used some white polishing compound on the outside of mine and they cleared up with a few minutes of rubbing. There is still just a touch of yellowing on the inside but still debating if I want to go through the trouble of disassembling them to get to the inside.

The best product that I have found is the Eagle One Ultra Fine Scratch Remover. I takes all of the yellow off the lights, and it works with very little effort. It is also a very good rubbing compound which I have used to remove fine scratches and other blemishes on my car. Here is a link to the product.

Good Luck

I agree with ensteele93.

(btw, thanks for de-yellowing all of our headlights at the last meet.)

You guys need to use something more abrasive, then use the sissy plastic cleaner. Try chrome polish or something with some 'bite' first, it works a lot better.

Course, if small car would START SELLING THOSE HEADLIGHTS WE WOUDLNT HAVE PROBLEMS HINT HINT HINT!

well, I did it.

I was able to get the last bottle of Meguiar's #10 Clear Plastic Polish at Advanced auto tuesday. I tried it by itself and it did absolutely nothing. I then went back to advanced and bought 400, 800, and 1500 grit sand paper. I sanded the headlights (only on the outside, too lazy to take them out and apart) using the 400 a lot, then the 800 some, and a whole lot with the 1500, and put on the meguiar's and it looked a lot better.

I would have been happy with it if my car wasn't parked between a 2000 looking jetta and a 98 looking Audi A4, which were leaps and bounds better looking.

Today I went around to napa, auto zone, ace's hardware, true-value hardware and finally allpro auto parts. There I got the last bottle of the novus hard cut stuff. It is actually called #3 Heavy Scratch Remover. I re-sanded the headlights with the 1500 paper, then put this on and rubbed hard and long, wiped it off, put on the meguiar's, wiped it off, and finally put on rainX. Now they look pretty good. They don't look anything like the results that the person got with theirs at the how-to website, (http://www.svxworldnetwork.org/resou...ing/index.html) but then again mine looked about one and a half times worse than his to begin with. Second, I only cleaned the outside of them.

What was odd, was that both advance auto and allpro didn't have more than one bottle, and second, that they didn't even have price markers on the shelves for where they should go.

Both of those cars have headlight covers that are so clear they actually seem to sparkle with a blue almost ultraviolet color in daylight. Mine wasn't really bad, you could see the bulbs inside, but it didn't look quite clear. More like the vinyl windows in a soft-top jeep wrangler that has been kept outside a few years. Now it looks like a typical cheap clear plastic non-disposable cup.

Do what I did in the how-to.... Take it off. Wetsand it for at least 20-30 minutes each time. Yours will be clearer than what they have.
