264 cams not working?

I have some 264s cams from delta cams, I also have solid buckets but I think the overlap is too much because I cant build hardly any compression, and I know its the cams because im at 150psi on all 6 cylinders with stock cams. Anyone with 264's have advice?

Re: 264 cams not working?

No I set the valve lash to spec by delta cams. This has been an on going issue and I know for fact timing in stock form is correct. I have the engine on a stand with valve covers off and engine pretty bare with Astarter mounted to it to pull compression numbers. They've been in and out of delta cams and they say they are correct and should work but I can't get them working. My intakev valves are still open partially through compression stroke and I'm pulling in air on my exhaust side, it's like the overlap is way off, thinking I need to degree the cams but why on 264s?

Re: 264 cams not working?

Do you have a pair of them upside down? I did that once, there are two sets of alignment dimples on the cam gears 180 degrees from each other. If you look at the front of the cams you'll see keyways for the timing belt gear on the intake and exhaust, even though the intake doesn't need it. The keyways have to point the same direction, either both up or both down.

Re: 264 cams not working?

If the cams are installed in the correct position, than the lash is not set correctly. As with most Subaru's with shimless buckets a good place to start is intake .008 and exhaust .010 spacing between the bucket and cam. If the valve is being held open with the cam lobes in the closed location than there is obviously negative clearance. It takes a long time checking and redoing things with feeler gauges to get the cams set correctly. It also takes a lot of different buckets to get the correct sizes in place. Its a pain doing it with 16 valves on the 4 cylinder, I would hate to add 8 more valves into it with the 6. The last 2.5 I did took like 50 different buckets to get the 16 we needed.
