Front axles spitting grease

Brought the SVX out of hibernation this weekend. When swapping the wheels I noticed some grease inside the front rims and wheel wells. The boot behind the wheel had quite a bit of grease on it. I brought it to my mechanic to check out the car and told him about the grease. He said I need new front axles. Any idea exactly what parts I need to buy? Anybody have them?

Re: Front axles spitting grease

Parts America $69.00 each. Took me 30 min to 45 min to replace each side.
Helps if you can get it up on a lift.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

If it's just cracked CV boots and the CVs are not clicking when you turn sharply at low speed, you may get away with just replacing the boots. They're under 20 bucks a side.
Some of the aftermarket CV axles are of dubious quality.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

How about the ones from Cardone or the ones from Autozone or Advance Auto Parts or Carquest or Napa?

I expected him to say we should replace the boots. Any idea why he would want to replace the whole axle instead?

Re: Front axles spitting grease

The labor cost is about the same for both jobs. Most garages prefer to replace rather than repair. They make money on the parts.

The OEM axles are very durable and much better quality than most aftermarket ones though.

As long as the outer hub is the correct diameter;
SVX Axle diameter
59 MM is correct

Actually the time it takes to install new boots is a lot longer than just replacing the part.

"They make money on the parts."
You don't make enough on a $70.00 part to cover your gas to go get the part.

I will agree on the quality of OEM parts, though.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

I think the Cardone parts are remanufactured Subaru parts. Is that your belief as well?

His mechanic didn't quote $70.00. Conn SVX did. You can bet his price will be higher.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

With newer gen Subarus getting oem rebuilds is easy. I spent about $150 per side (08' Legacy) for rebuilt oems with a 12 month warrenty because the aftermarket brands are known to cause vibrations at idle.

With my SVX i got a cheap set from ebay and they have been fine for about a year now.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

I have Autozone ones on mine and there OEM rebuilt axles. about $55 a side with a $75 core charge and a lifetime warrenty. Never had a problem with them and they've been on there for years.

Re: Front axles spitting grease

I bought a pair from Amazon, $85 no core charge! I had them on for over a year. No problems so far. The Mechanic was impressed with the quality.
