They said it couldn't be done... [ before & after ]

(original thread here)

Took the SVX into the local school body shop in November shortly after it was wrecked and picked it up today. The total bill was $1,200. It's not perfect, but it's definitely driveable now and they did pretty good considering what they had to work with. I'm glad to have at least one SVX I can drive for the time being.... unfortuantely, I don't think I'll proceed to doing everything I had originally planned with it being the minor imperfections are enough to bother me skin deep and instead will probably try to find another LSL in the future, blue in color with low miles to officially make as my 'project' car. I will however, drive the living **** out of this one.

and After (safe and sound in my garage):

I would have parted that one out but, having a son that went through automotive tech school and worked similar miracles in some of the most incredible shop set-ups, if anyone out there has a tech school close to them, go for it. Like Subix said, not perfect but a new life that can be enjoyed.

And a good learning experience for a bunch of kids.

I had a motor swap done on a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix FWD many, many moons ago at a local school. It took most of a winter but cost me next to nothing other than the motor. Funny thing was the kids working on the car weren't all that much younger than I was at the time. I just didn't know anything much about cars back then.

Awesome! Great job getting her drivable again. I would probably do the same in your position if something happened to my car.

I think most people are too quick to pull the "I'd part it out..." trigger, instead of finding options in having it repaired but then again to most people it's just a car... that or they have enough disposable income and can buy another $3k+ SVX at the drop of a hat so it's just an easier option. In about 5 years, I'm guessing the SVX market will dwindle down near to nothing and prices will slowly climb because they'll actually be increasingly difficult to find. You know, currently they're a dime a dozen on craigslist if you're willing to travel but that's going to change in a rather short period of time. I'd bet to say even as soon as 2-3 years you'll see less and less being listed that's not complete junk and as they are, prices will rise.

They seemed to really dig the car and one said "looks like a DeLorean" and none of them initially knew what it was and was surprised to learn that it was a Subaru.

Subix, thanks for the slap on the back of my head. In retrospect, I would do everything possible to make my SVX whole again.

Glad to see another saved from the crusher. For some odd reason this reminded me of these. Some of you might be old enough to remember them

Re: They said it couldn't be done... [ before & after ]

I bought a 93 that was very similar to that one. I work at a Technical College and the auto body shop said that they would work on it for me. I bought a front clip and they got it back almost as good as new. The original owners cost estimate was $15,000 to fix it. It cost me a total of $3,000 to get it back to a runable 93 SVX. I wouldn't have done it unless it was a 93, one of only 301, and all of the extras on it.
