electric fan startup noise
I am a recent owner of my SVX. I have noticed that when the car is idling for a bit, the electric fan kicks on, which I assume is a good thing. However, there is an odd fairly loud noise that happens just before it kicks on, sort of like arcing, or something else electrical trying to switch the fan on. Maybe a relay or switch... Is this common? Does this mean that something is about to go out?

Re: electric fan startup noise
Could well be a totally different thing, but I had to replace a fan motor because the bearings were apparently shot. I was alerted to this by a faint rumble I could hear for just a second or two after switching off the car. Point being, 20 year old electric motors do wear out. Spin and wiggle the fan blades and see if there's any play in or noise from the motor shaft. Also look for obvious signs of arcing on the motors and wiring. The fan assemblies are super-simple to remove.

Re: electric fan startup noise
I will look into the bearings this weekend, but I think it has more to do with the switch that turns the fans on. I will let everyone know what it turns out to be.

Re: electric fan startup noise
Mine were making a high pitched "Whirring" noise at start up, when they got replaced. Bearings were blown out.
