New Engine vs Rebuilding Existing

Hello All,

Happy Thursday; as I'm progressing with my "cleaning up" of my SVX, I'm wrestling with how to address my engine.

I have about 130,000 miles and am losing compression and leaking oil.

I'm debating cost and benefit on whether or not I should try to buy a new-ish (rebuilt) SVX engine or the front-clip or if I should go to a speed / performance shop and get a complete re-build / overhaul done to my existing engine.

Has anyone done this work on their SVX and could you provide some thoughts on the pros and cons of the scenarios?

Any input would be appreciated (I'm in Philadelphia, PA in the Northeast US).

Thanks!

Brand new is the best way and funny you mention this because I've been helping DesertRunner with some parts and only the other day mentioned to him that I can get brand new short blocks from Subaru.

I can get a brand new short block shipped to you for around $2150. Subaru short blocks include rods, pistons bearings and crank all assembled so all you do is bolt the rest on and away you go. I can also get a brand new set of OEM head gaskets for about $125 delivered.

Head gaskets are available in the US for about $80 for the pair, FYI. That seems like a great price from Subaru for the shortblocks though. I was curious if they were actually attainable or not. Is that price shipped to you in Australia, or shipped anywhere in the world?

OEM. Full reseal kit is about $260ish. Includes valve cover gaskets and grommets, TB, head gaskets, intake, valve stem seals, exhaust gaskets (manifold to head), cam/crank seals, cam plugs, timing cover seals, and I'm probably forgetting a bunch.
