Prop shaft center bearing?

How to tell if the center bearing is good or bad? Should it be co-centric with the carrier? The rubber seems fine, no tears. the bearing itself has a tine bit of play, but it's smooth. The only thing is the shaft is not co-centric with the metal support (see attachement).

Thanks,

Tapani

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

it's fine if the shaft sits a little lower in the rubber like that, the rubber isn't very hard so it's allowed to move up and down. if the bearing isn't making noise and you don't get any thumping up and down as the shaft spins it's probably fine. are you having a problem with it or just noticed the droop?

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

Thanks,

Swapping trannies and noticed it when I took the exhaust system down.

I look closer when I remove the shaft.

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

You'll find that it is designed to sit off center like that.

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

Subject realted: Mine sits a little low, I had to bend the heat shield down so the prop shaft wouldn't vibrate on it at low speeds. Is that normal with only 95K on the car?

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

Ok, I took it off... the U-joints are bad.

Has anyone replaced them? Or do you just buy a whole new shaft assy?

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

you pretty much need to get a whole new shaft. it is possible to replace them but not worth the time to do it.

For him, getting a new driveshaft will be very costly. Find a shop to put in new u-joints that are also greasable/serviceable. When YT was doing MT driveshafts here stateside,he was also getting these type of u-joints put in and was still able to keep the cost way below a new Subaru shaft here in the states. (around $200 including shipping each way on the MT shafts)

Re: Prop shaft center bearing?

Yeah, sounds like a plan. It appears a new shaft is ove 500$ + shipping + VAT and customs.... 7-800$ in total. That's quite a bit

I know a good prop shaft shop - need to talk to them.

The center bearing seems fine, except the rubber bellow "looks old" and sags toward the bottom

Thanks guys,

Tapani
