Tranny rebuild

What would be a fair price to have the stock 4EAT Tranny rebuilt. I cant risk or afford to buy another used unit, and then have that fail. Flatbed driver told me a local tranny shop near me would charge about $1200 I thought it would closer to $2000 or more.

I paid $2700 for the one in my 95 about 3 years ago.

Re: Tranny rebuild

When I lost first and reverse, I immediately took it in and it cost $1,200. That was 4 years ago. When it happens again I'm going to spring for the upgraded valve body by ECUtune.

Re: Tranny rebuild

I bought a 94 SVX trans from a wrecking yard for a core, had it rebuilt at DRW Transmission in Santee CA., which is near San Diego. Several SVXers have used them in the past and they are known for doing quality work. In speaking with Don the owner he felt a quality job done on these transmissions should cost at least 3k and that was in a conversation several years ago. The trans that they built has been stored for two years. I just did not have the time or funds to trailer it the 300 miles to have it installed. Their fee for installation was to be $500. My local Subaru dealer said their fee would be 500 as well. I really preferred DRW but decided to trust the dealer. They are actually doing the installation today. They have phoned and want 55.00 extra to install the updated flex plate as recommended by this forum and I was surprised at there lack of knowledge of an SVX. They claim SVXs never had trans problems. I am chewing my finger nails at this moment. The service advisor sez trust us. Umm? I have had 6 subarus , lost an engine on 96 GT wagon. My SVX has only 76K. I treasure my pearlie. But his is the last subaru I will own. Steve

Re: Tranny rebuild

The original tranny from my 97 Ebony is being rebuilt as we speak. The shop called me before starting the rebuild, and wanted to know what was wrong with the tranny, so they had an idea of what was wrong with it. Is this normal procedure. Also when they do a rebuild do they replace the solenoids or do I need to tell them to replace them. The tranny was slipping and had no first or second. Im paying $1500 for the rebuild with a 12 month 12k mile warranty, and that includes installation and removal of the junk tranny that I bought on this forum. Is there anything I need to let them know.

I would ask the shop about the soleniods, if they were not planning on replacing them, I would ask them to. It is worth the extra money in parts to have that piece of mind. I hope it turns out well for you.

Re: Tranny rebuild

I paid $2000+ in 1998, that included a rebuilt torque converter. Solenoids checked out OK, also had to do a new tranny mount. that was at 70k miles in a 92. That is my wife's SVX

If I ever need a rebuild on my SVX, I'm going to Santee at DRW. Still on original tranny at 125k miles
