Re: is this someone here's car?
Haha, that reminds me of our old Merc when the engine sleeve cracked and water was mixed with oil...

Re: is this someone here's car?
what a shame.
you said in the video that "that is why you don't powdercoat an engine". Do you think that the powdercoating restricted the aluminum from dissipating the heat efficiently or do you think that some paint got in your cylinders? Or are you just saying that because now it has to come out and will need touch up before it goes back in? Good luck with your R&R |

Quote:
It is believed that the heat the engine block was subjected to during the powdercoating process may have been one of the causes that contributed to the eventual loss of oil pressure and compression. The periphirals all are okay, and we are going over the heads before installing them on the new short block. With the shop closing, this was a "do-or-die" situation. Either walk away and give up, losing what I have in it so far, or instead invest the time and money to get the engine out and redone. I will also be taking this opportunity to address some items that could prove to be major issues down the road, namely the fuel and brake lines, converting the car to 5 speed and installing more durable engine and trans mounts (Group N).

Re: is this someone here's car?
No, we have not had problems with those items, and I plan to run them all again on my own car, as there are several others running these items powder coated as well.

Re: is this someone here's car?
Well, I hope everything goes smooth for you on your engine. FYI if aluminum is kept above 250 degrees f for 10+ minutes it begins to lose its structural integrity. And it goes pretty quick from there. This will change depending on the concentration and composition of different alloys, but not by much. I would guess our engines aluminum is probably some sort of chromate alloy, but I have never researched this. Purely speculation.

Re: is this someone here's car?
Next time, two coats of "normal" paint for the engine.. It works! Believe me!

Re: is this someone here's car?
I would say mikes misfortune would point to powdercoating the heads and/or block to be too risky due to the sustained temperatures involved with the process of baking the paint.
Our blocks are an alloy so they may be able to handle it, but some top shelf rattle can will be the way I go when i reassemble my block. Doing the heads though seems extremely risky to me, so I will rattlecan those too . |
