Don't get metal in your eye

It sucks a lot. I have had crap in my eyes before, this one decided to get in bedded in there though which sucked a hell of a lot. Two trips to different ER's finally got it removed. Still need to see an eye doctor next week to check for any left-overs and its healing process...

Not Good Tom,

I have only one, so have some experience. From what you say you do not have to worry. The eye has good healing properties. But yes, make sure a specialist who has all the gear, checks it out. Two is not too many.

Cheers, Trevor.

You've got it. Putting a screwdriver on a small screw becomes difficult. As for welding or soldering.

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

I feel for ya. FEW things bug like something stuck in the eye. When I was interning for Americorps down at Lake Mead, a small quill from a Beavertail cactus lodged in the side of my eye. We were out in the middle of the desert, so they had to drive me 10 miles to the paved road where we met the park ranger so they could get me to the nearest eyewash station. It took 20 minutes of blinking and running water on my eyeball before the friggin thing finally unstuck.

So you wearing an eyepatch now there Cap'n ??

The last time I had the pleasure of this particular affliction, a Dr named Jesus Tan used what felt like SANDPAPER to drag it out!! When the 'drops' wore off, I damned near kicked the arms off of the COUCH I was laying on!! MAN, DID it HURT!!! I have FELT that pain!! It was actually WORSE than the 1588 laser zaps it took to fix my detatched retinas!

Tom, I am SORRY that you didn't wear safety glasses!!

As a side note, I ALWAYS get the BIGGEST 'aviator' frames I can, and have BULLET PROOF glass installed when I get new glasses!

I have learned, the HARD way, that mechanics do NOT wear contacts!!

You only get ONE pair of eyes!! I have seen what it looks like to be BLIND in one of them!! I have seen BOTH of them lose the center field of vision due to an infection of the optic nerves. EYES are IMPORTANT!!

I will pray that your problem doesn't slow you down. I will also pray that ALL you guys that read this will invest in a pair of 'Aviator-sized' SAFETY glasses and WEAR them!!

I didn't LIKE being blind!! ( but it 'opened my eyes' to a world that I had heard about, but knew nothing about!)

May God Bless and heal you!!

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

Oh yeah goggles is a must! When I used to work with fiberglass, I had a piece hit the side of my glasses (I do wear glasses) and my eyebrow. This is when I decided that myself is more important than the car so I bought a set of goggles and that was the smartest thing I ever did.

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

Same as that. I wear safety glasses, finding them easier than goggles, but I use both.

I'm also pleased to see my two youngest, one of whom is in laboratory work and the other doing engineering, they never tackle anything without the safety glasses. There must be good fundamental safety training in the schools now, the message has sunk in.

Tom, I wish you the quickest full recovery. Take care of yourself man.

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

I didn't wear safety glasses most of my life until I worked in a machine shop where they were required. Now I wear them when doing anything that could cause eye injury including working on a car and even using a weed eater. Only two eyes and loss of one is really bad considering depth perception. I like the little plastic safety glasses that wrap around and protect the side angles also. I go through quite a few of them as they scratch easily, but its well worth it.

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

I always wear glasses when I am cutting or grinding. But in this case it was just a loose shaving the was just dropped in somehow or another... feeling 100% better today though and I am sure over the next 2 days it will be back to normal

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

Tom, as someone who has ported cylinder heads for a long time, I know your pain!

I've had stuff removed from my eyes eight times by eye specialists. Twice it was because the cast iron shards had rusted so they had to numb the eye, and drill out the debris plus the surrounding area (to avoid infection). By comparison, aluminum is easy!

I try to use a full face-shield whenever possible these days. Keeps stuff out of your eyebows which otherwise might fall back into your eye later on.

Re: Don't get metal in your eye

I once washed the car even wearing safety s and still got metal in the eye. Bloody hell did it hurt.
And I think I got something else in my eye too.
