Gps

Has anyone had problems with a GPS unit in the SVX?

I'm wondering whether the windshield will affect the reception, given the problems with radar detectors, transponders, and such.

Thx.

I have a 93 anniversary model, and my radar dectector works as well as my GPS. I have read many posts that say that members have problems with these because of the window. I have not had any problems with them. I have the gold tinted windshield. They may have problems, but I am not sure why I am not having the same problems. Just lucky I guess.

I seem to get better reception, oddly enough, during the day. Some days I also have to be heading in a certain direction to get clear signals.

The best option, I believe, is to mount an active antenna in the trunk lid, between the lining and the lid itself. I've tried my GPS in the trunk and it seems to work as if it was totally unobstructed in there.

Thx for the feedback.

This is the strange part for me. If I start with the antenna inside of the car, it won't pick up at all. If I start outside the sunroof, and bring it in, it *seems* to work OK. I guess my antenna just isn't sensitive enough.

I want to mount it outside, but the wire's not long enough, and I'm worried about it going AWOL while I'm not with the car.

Oh well. I'll just have to mount it on the passenger door next to the window, and hope the passenger won't trip over the wire.

What brand and type of GPS are you using? I have a Garmin Map 76. I don't have an external antenna yet, but I have been thinking about it. I do have some problems in some areas. When I was traveling from Oklahoma to WA State, I had some problems in Utah. It would loose the signal once in a while.

I have the same car/ windsheild... and a radar detector to boot. I have noticed that although my detector does work, it works 10 times better in other vehicles, so at worst, I would say its recption is hampered.

Now I'm thinking that maybe I should just get that active antenna so I can have it before the meet. This is the model I was looking at about a year ago:

http://www.gpscables.com/mma-01.html

It has the longest cable I can find.

Where are you going to mount the antenna and are you going to use the magnets or screw mounts? It looks like a good one. What GPS do you have? Thanks for the link to the site for the antenna.

What's this about problems with radar detectors? I have one, and I think it works ok, I haven't really paid much attention though.

I'm going to velcro it under the liner in the trunk lid. No screws, no magnets.

I have a Magellan GPS Tracker.

Things that do not work on the LS-L and LSi (since I currently own both )

Rader beepers, toll way passes, GPSes...

Things that work on the L (base model, non titanium coated) windshield...

All the above items.

I have a GPS that hooks into my PDA so I put it on my side hand rest. Otherwise, get a coex extender and stick in on your back shelf. That should work great.

Lwin,

So you have the GPS antenna around the area of the window switches?

I have the Destinator for the Ipaq, and at this point I'm wondering if it's the unit or not, as I've tried the back shelf method, and still didn't work. The only place that seems to work is by the side windows, and even at that it works 1/2 the time.

Hmmmm. That's interesting. My Garmin 12 used to work OK in my LSi, but now I have a PDA mounted gps which I havn't even tried in the SVX. It's usually being set up in a rental car somewhere.
I'm going to try it as soon as I get home tonight.
