Climate Control is freaking out

Hi guys,

Another issue...

Since the new radiator, the climate control keeps switching on and off, keeps setting temp to 18 degrees. Also, the outside temp button is not working.

Anyone help me with this?

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

Brady

I'm sorry to tell you that the symptoms you describe spell Bad News for your climate control. This is the Kiss of Death, it means your logic circuits have gone AWOL.

It's a known fault and I've had similar problems. In some cases the temp goes all the way up the scale to 32, in other cases the temp drives itself down to 18, no matter what you do. In conjunction to this the outside temp indicator blinks on occasion without any button having been pressed. As it gets worse, this outside temp button will not respond to pushing at all.

The USA guys can't help on this, theirs is a different model of controller, SFAIK.

When this was outlined before the word from Japan is that it is an age related problem. Most people replace the dash unit with one from a scrapped car. Buying a new unit from Subaru is serious dollars.

Recently I dismantled one of my units and I noticed a burnt out component, a capacitor. I've just had a friend replace this bad capacitor with a similar but better component, and received the repaired circuit boards back this weekend. There is no way to know if this repair will fix the problem until the unit is re-assembled and installed in the car. I hope to get this done when I am off a few days over Christmas time.

If the replaced capacitor does not fix the logic circuits, it is a case of "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." If by chance it DOES make the panel good, I will post up a photographic How To so that owners can get the repair done themselves.

I'll get back to you as soon as I have had a chance to do the install.

Fingers crossed

Joe

Unhappy Re: Climate Control is freaking out

I am beginning to HATE my SVX.

Someone please help!

I have only spent money on the car - have rarely driven it.

Is there anything else that is going to get me?

I have fixed the transmission.
I have replace the underdrive crank pulley.
I have replaced the battery.
I have replaced the radiator.
I am replacing the water pump..
My climate control is now fuc#ed.

What can I expect next, the frikin' wheels will fall off??

Close. Rear wheel bearings will start to growl or scream for attention.

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

Brady

I was only joking!

I'm sorry you feel this way, but I do understand.

When I got my first SVX, everything seemed to be broken. My heart sank. It was with encouragement from members here, and in particular with help and encouragement from Harvey, a fellow countryman of yours, I got my car working like a precision watch. It gave me great service. No regrets.

We generally advise people not to buy the first car you see, get one that has been loved and cared for. The cars are tough and generally reliable, but they can often be owned by people who will not spend money or time fixing things before they become big or expensive problems.

Have a look at your list. You have nearly everything that can happen to the SVX fixed. Buy yourself a second hand aircon computer for maybe $100.

Don't lose heart now when you have a really good car nearly perfect.

Joe

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

Thanks Joe.

I appreciate the words of encouragement. I kind of went out on a limb, financially, to buy this SVX and I was expecting SOME problems, not ALL of them in sequence!!

You are right, I have nearly completed the list of repairs and need to hang in there! I am looking for Climate Control units on ebay now. I need a RHD one for my Aussie spec. Have only seen LHD units so far...

Thanks again.

Mike

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

Mike, I understand man. Freaking out is the natural and logical response with the SVX sometimes.

Send a PM to SubbieatNZ. He was breaking a jdm car and may have the aircon computer.

When you get it sorted, use the car more. The SVXs with very high mileage give little trouble. Like all complicated electronics cars, leaving them parked is bad news. Dampness gets into the wiring, and bad earths cause all sorts of problems. Once you get it good, use it a lot, you will get repaid many times over for all you put into it.

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

Sorry to hear that.

It happened to me once..and only once...and that was when Jason came to look at the car when I was selling it!

Of all the times!!

And for a few years later, it did not happen to him - he managed to get AU$1000 off because of that.

Would you believe it - it still hasn't happened!!

I have had to do the normal repairs that any SVX eventually requires (replace the radiator, rebuild the alternator, re-solder the MAF)...........

........but I have never had a problem with the climate control!!!

Re: Climate Control is freaking out

A pox on your house!!

I think it was the car trying not to leave me!

It is funny that, since then, I have had a Mercedes 300SL, a Mercedes S500 coupe, a BMW 750il and a Lexus LS400 (cars are dirt cheap in the UK!) but the SVX (which I named but that is between me and her!!) is still the one.

However, it does mean that I can never buy another one since the passage of time is such that wear and tear means I won't find another like that one...interestingly, a week or so and it has been five years since I sold it to you! I still remember down the Space Station on the Epping Road showing you around it.

Glad to see that you still have it
