Question about the main AC line

So theres a 94 LE in a junk yard thats not to far from where I live. What Im wondering is this... Is it possible to take the main AC line from the 94 and put it into my 92? Since the 92 is R12 and the 94 is 134A, that would make it so I wouldnt have to use the retrofit kit anymore. I cant leave the kit on my 92, it makes the freon all leak out! Just a thought.. as the hose itself really doesnt look that much different, just the new fitting. -Dennis

Re: Question about the main AC line

What all would I need to change over? When I recharged mine I used 134... was that bad?

Re: Question about the main AC line

You should have tried to get all of the oil out of the system, but you can use some that is compatable with the old stuff.

Re: Question about the main AC line

So if I go to do it again, what should I do? Would that main line just be take the old one out, and put the new one in?

Re: Question about the main AC line

Nope. I leaked the freon out again by leaving the retrofit kit on the main line. This is why I was asking. It would make it eaiser to have the updated fitting, and I could do it right this time around.

Re: Question about the main AC line

Change out the line and make sure that the O-Rings that are easy to get to are replaced. (on the condenser)

Re: Question about the main AC line

Alright, thats what I had planned on doing. What would I need to do to replace the oil in the system as well? I would like to do the full change over to 134. Thanks for the help Earl

Re: Question about the main AC line

Usually you take out the compressor and open the plug and drain it all out. Then you can charge the system when you have a vaccume drawn on it and use a can of refriderant with oil to replace it.

Re: Question about the main AC line

Alright sounds good! Any ideas on about how many cans it will take to refill it back up? Also are those the bigger cans, or the small ones we used at the first meet I came to?

Re: Question about the main AC line

You can get big or small cans with the oil. You only need one can with the oil, and in all, 2 or 3 small cans. You just have to watch the needle and when it shows it is up to the pressure, stop there.

Re: Question about the main AC line

1 other thing you will need to do and its a pain to change. . . The expansion valve $25 @ autozone. youll have to take the glove box out to get to it. took me about 4 hours.
The reason for this is the R-134a is thicker than the R-12 so the R-134a expansion valve will open up more allowing it to cool right.

Better to measure the amount of oil that you drain out of the compressor, and pour that much back into the compressor through the high side port while the system is still open.

When you put the retrofit kit on, did you take the valve core out of the low side port on the car before you put the adaptor fitting on? If you didn't, it will leak. (You'll need a tire valve core tool to get it out, about $2 at a parts store)

If you mixed R134a and R12, you have a system full of what is considered to be hazardous waste, that no shop will touch since it costs about $400 to dispose of, although since you have a leak it's probably empty. Your best bet is to change the lines over to the newer ones that are in the junkyard, change all the o-rings, and then take the car to an AC shop and have them evacuate and charge the system. If you would rather do it yourself, get a manifold gauge set, so you can monitor both the high and low side pressures, and you should be able to find a Haynes AC manual, will make it all easier. I'd still recommend at least having a shop pull a vacuum on the system, since you've had it open, you will want to make sure you get any and all moisture out of the system.
