Motor Trend Classic - "SVX a future classic"
Hello All
Pardon me if this is old or already been posted but I just came across it for the first time. I don't know when the article was written but if recent it does suggest that the selling price for a low mile 96 or 97 is expected to be in the 10K range-cool. Motor Trend Classic suggests that the 92-97 SVX has potential as a future classic. Its a short but nice read and I like the statement that "Subaru gave the world its first opportunity to drive a concept car." Now I really can't wait till I pick up my 97 Ebony. http://www.motortrend.com/classic/c12_0509_subaru_svx Regards Max Max |

Snap em up while you can folks, prices are trending upwards lately, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Rising demand, dwindling supply, and an growing number of nods from popular car magazines is actully changing my opinion on whether or the the SVX will raise to "classic" status.

It's a nice car, no doubt. Who knows, maybe something will come of it.
My grey looks nothing like this... Unless that's the black from europe.

Disclaimer and Thoughts
My pleasure Earl. I would like to find out how old the article is, its got not date written anywhere.
I know they write in the beginning that they do not suggest that one should go out and buy cheap SVX cars resulting in one being able to make a small fortune on selling them, they must write that in case someone takes it too literal and goes out and spend their life savings on getting every possible SVX they can find then going broke and trying to sue Motor Trend or the writer. It is the old US of A after all, the land of opportunity. Kind of like that Pepsi ad a few years back with the points system where they showed a British Harrier Jet landing and displaying an amount of points that should have been unattainable and that kid posted a Web site asking the world to send him all their points so that he may win. He did and later took Pepsi to court. Or that lady that sued McDonald's for burning herself with the hot they just served her when she spilled it herself etc... I do feel that the article was quite interesting and it made a lot of good points. Now, yes, Japanese cars are not regarded as collectable as Detroit Iron 70's muscle cars are but I also do feel that this will change in the near future as: A) These 70's muscle cars have now become too expensive for the averages B) Other manufactures such as Subaru and Mazda start to reach classic status in form of age in the USA/Canada and viewed as such. C) The low production numbers of the SVX D) The uniqueness of the SVX & the fact that it really was a concept car made available to the masses. E) Its known and popular designer and his place in automotive history All these make it not just another Subaru and not just another car. It will not happen over night but the SVX does have what would normally be required to create a classic automobile. What it does not have yet is the age. Classics are by definition a car that is 25 years or older. 15 Years is accepted but the true definition is determined as a 25 year old item. I think that once the 97's hit 15+ years of age making the entire model run of age is when this trend might start, and that is if it starts at all. Now that is not to say that society does not play a factor in this. The SVX has a cult following thats is pretty much unusual for a car of this age. Not that there are no others but it does have its following, such as this site etc... This too can drive a cars status up market. As numbers are low and demand grows the laws of economics will take place. Now Earl, this does paint a pretty picture for you. Keep on buying them. Like I posted before. My vision of the future. The ads for all the SVX's for sale in 10 years from now will be with Earl's name at the bottom and his choice of pricing.. That is of coarse minus my 97 Ebony. And to all of you. as I said in one of my previous posts, "Stop Selling Them So Cheap" Regards Max |

Japanese cars will start seeing recognition as classics. Right now classics are defined as what cool cars our parents had. With the age of people who have "buying power", that's the kids of the musclecar era.
As the next generation reaches the age of buying power, the cool cars of that day are the 80's-90's cars. America had a few cool cars at the time. F-bodies, Vettes, and 'Stangs. Then there are a few limited production cars, the Monte Carlo, Impala, and Silverado 454 SS. Beyond those are the Japanese supercars. The NSX, Supra, RX-7, 300Z, 3000GT, and last but not least the SVX. These are the "cool cars" of the next generation. This is by no means a set in stone fact, just my opinion. I love the musclecars, but have been priced right out of the game. Right now the Japanese cars are at the bottom of thier price swings. Nice examples are starting to climb back up. Keep this in mind, even the lowly Ford Pinto, in excellent shape, is worth more than it's new list price. Clean, low mile examples have fetched $10k on E-bay.

If anyone would like a PDF file of the magazine article, pm me. It didn't have as many pictures as the on-line version.
