How do you guys with 2 SVXes live?

Yesterday, I opened the door, put a key in and started to drive the svx. At the destination, I stop the car and pull out the key and the key will not come out. Why? 94 Key was in the 92 and I drove around chicago with it. How is that possiable? Anyways, after a while, after a ton of wiggling, the damn key came out. Close call.

Question, how can you guys with more than one SVX prevent oneself from going through the same crap?

Theoretically, one key should not work in the other car. Obviously, your situation is contrary to theory. Perhaps if you had new, freshly cut keys, they would not fit so well into the other's ignition switch.

get both sets of key re-cut. Unless of course you're "lucky" enough to have two identically keyed Scoobies!

Mark the keys or have the cylinders matched. If you don't mark them it's too easy to break the wrong key off in the wrong car - and you wouldn't be the first one to do that either. (Did it with two look-alike customers cars years ago, what a mess.... 0

I used to work in a hardware store:
If you get the keys recut, I would recommend giving them the least used key you have and have them cut it and test it. If it doesn't work, there's really no sense in having another copy of your worn key unless to give to someone else. One thing I've learned there (dealing with people with ten-year old keys) is that when you buy a new car or house or whatever, make a bunch of copies beforehand and keep 'em.

If you have an original key it should have the lock pattern number on it (a 4-digit number) with that number a locksmith can cut a new key without having to use the old key, thus having a key just like when new.

While it may be expensive, can't a Subaru dealership find that key code through the Suby database using your VIN?

It may have been a rumor I heard.

Last I heard, you could cut a key for any car by providing VIN. Mabe this would explain how my friend chris's car was stolen with the doors locked. When we got it back, there wasn't any torn plastic on the colum. It looked just like it did when he last saw it. (Minus EVERYTHING) he had the car stuffed with junk, but you'd think they took it to a car wash and vacumed it for him. They even took the dome light cover and bulb. Sheesh

I've worked at dealerships and at Hertz and neither had access to any info like that. In fact, at Hertz we manually logged every vehicle in our local fleet so we could cut keys from a sheet. However that didn't always work either. There was more than a few times I had to go over to the terminal and crawl through a backseat to retrieve the keys some numbnut dropped in the trunk because he was too lazy to check the car in and ride the bus over. It was easy to tell who was lazy and who wasn't - the real 'accidentallys' left stuff in the trunk when they dropped the keys.

We live wonderfully, thankyou.


I painted the Pearly key and pushbutton fob with white pearl nail polish. That way I never confuse the keys.
I always color code the car keys the same color as the car with very cheap nail polish. It's cheap and easy, and lasts a long time.
