Talking 5speed tranny

Well, i got a call from TomsSVX yesterday saying my car was done, 4 days ahead of schedule. I had a new 5 speed manual transmission installed into my 94 LSi. The install took less than a week's time, actually only about 3 days of actual work.

So i get the call, and i'm like damn, i'd really like to drive it, but tom was quite a hike from where my house or office. I sent an email to a friend at the office asking her if she could give me a ride up, as she had rode up with me to drop the car off a week prior. She replied it would be no problem, and is using it as leverage to fix her tivo and replace her brake pads, but oh well.

So i get up there, and i beat tom to his shop, as he was coming to jersey, but only by about 30 seconds. I see my car turn the corner, and drive down. Incredible looking. He pulls over and gets out so i can get in. I get in, adjust the seat, and felt the shifter. It was really tight, zero play, almost resistance to play in it. I put the clutch down, and can't quite figure out where the release in the clutch is, it was pretty high up apparnetly, not comfortable for me at all. Tom said no problem, pulled it into the garage and gets with the adjusting, as well as finishes some last minute tidbits along the line.

It had been about a year since i drove a manual transmission, so it took a bit of getting used to. After about 45 seconds and 300ft of road, it was like butter. The shifting was so smooth, the release point on the clutch was exactly where i wanted it. It has incredible low end power, first and second gear you hit redline as fast as you can push the pedal down. Cruising speed was perfect too. 2000rpm at 50mph in 5th gear, 200rpm at 40mph in 4th gear, and so on. It was a perfect balance between the low end umph and the highway cruising.

Gotta be careful though, not used to having to shift. I was on the freeway in 4th gear about to go around a tractor trailer, and i mashed the accelerator to get around him, expecting it to go into power mode... It took me about a minute before i realized hey, no more power mode. Oh well, i shifted to third, punched it, and made it around him with ease.

The difference in low end power, high end power, and over-all control of the car is incredible. Tom did a hell of a job with it, I couldn't have asked for a better install. Clean, precise, feels like it was ment to be there.

Thanks Tom for all your hard work.

Jay

Arrow Congrats!

Sounds like a plan. Better start saving my pennies. I hear nothing but great things about both Toms. If I lived closer, Id be hanging around their garages spending all my money.
