Some interesting news...

From the local Harford County paper, "The Record":

Quote:
Several members of the stadium's event planning staff cringed during
Wednesday's stadium management board meeting cringed when [board
chair] Campion confirmed the Aberdeen City Council agreed there would
be no more auto racing events permitted in the stadium parking lot.

She said the council decided racing events caused damage to the
stadium's asphalt parking lot, which never received its final seal coat.

Members of the stadium's event planning team had concerns that
eliminating races and road rallies would cut a significant revenue source.

Campion explained it was too late to object to the decision, since a
city engineer had completed a study and determined the damage was too
great.

"I think we've done everything we can do," she said. "The city just
told me it has to stop."
Hopefully, this'll have no impact on this year's Subaru Challenge, but it'll definitely have an impact on all autocross events there next year...

The only up side to this is that maybe they'll move the Subie Challenge to FedEx next year
My understanding is that it's the RV shows, circus and other activities up at Ripken that have torn the lot up, but it's easier to blame the autoX crowd

According to a post in the Subie Challenge thread on nabisco, a PCA event is still being held tomorrow, so it definitely appears that events already scheduled for this season are still on.

Tom and I are only driving 170 miles to be there.

Haha. Guess I am "that guy". Unfortantly, "that guy" is a poor college student who has to go to classes and work.

And it'd be about 500 miles for me... Seems like a long drive to... go driving...

Thumbs up

Well the BMW and PCA events scheduled at Ripken this past weekend took place w/o a hitch. All contracts currently on the books for '07 will be honored.

Craig Garfield from the WDCR and Mike Snyder from Autocrossers, Inc are both in talks with management at Ripken Stadium as well as the county. Here's hoping the lot will be around in '08!

Btw, current weather.com 5-day forecast for Aberdeen, MD calls for a high of 86F on Saturday under partly cloudy skies!

I gotta be careful not to get shoved into the 'kill stories' catigory, BUT!!

Tom and I were out 'lunge-ing' the SVX, ( Similar to what the horse racers do) to get the 'theroughbred' ready for the Preakness. While we were 'minding our own business', honda boy with the 'mines bigger than yours' muffler and the primer ground effects started 'pushing' on our back door.

Tom 'recalibrated' the instruments, put his finger on the 'target' on the boost guage, tightened the seatbelt and nodded. We put about 150 YARDS between our rear bumper and the primer 'ground effects' in a scant 4 seconds, thereby reducing our risk of an inexperienced driver in a poorly prepared car damaging the back of the SVX.

( this was an 'enviornment' controled by nature, since there were NO access roads, pull off places, houses, pedestrians, or unexpected happenstances)

Honda-boy might have to get a hearing test though, due to the 'stinging' sensation in his ears.

I think we're ready for the CHALLENGE!

I have to admit I have done something similar before. I took an off ramp (a loop back and was in effect about a 180 degree turn) with a young stud in a Firebird right on my bumper "pushing me". What he "didn't know" was that I was coming from autocross with my race tires still on the car. I took the inside line at close to three times the "recommended" exit speed. The last I saw of him in the rear-view mirror was him fighting the wheel to stay on the road. I never saw him again ......

I GUESS they will have to move the 'Challenge' to CUMBERLAND!! We have an airport that realized the 'ERROR' when they quit racing sports cars in the 70's!

They have 'allowed' the auto-x guys to put fresh rubber on the tarmac for 6 years now and we have only had to buy 6 runway lights and a 50' piece of fence.

I might have to put a 'bug' in the Subi-guys' ear.
It would break my heart to have the Challenge' happen less that 2 miles from the BEST Subi-guru's house!

Move it to CUMBERLAND!!
They LIKE sports cars and WELCOME the 'tourist' traffic!
( since we have NO other job opportunities!)
We do have a really nice 'resort' that NONE of the locals can afford to smack a golf ball or buy a dinner at.
( They want to attract a " BETTER " clientel).
(I guess that's WHY they were sucking over a MILLION DOLLARS out of the local tax base to keep it going last year.......)

DANG!! Here I go putting a 'political' thing into a post that is being threatened by politics!
We don't HAVE to go to the biggest speed trap in Allegany County to buy an over-priced meal, at an overpriced resort, that has been DRAINING ALL of the tourist money spent here for 20 years!
There is always Holiday INN, or a TENT at the 'farm' or Tom's house, or one of the many motels that are not worth mentioning in the propaganda put out by state gov'ment.

Let's have fun with cars, as long as those idiots allow us to buy gasoline, WHEREEVER we have to run and hide to do it!!!!

Just found the 'notice' from subi-challenge

Being the redneck that I am, I sent them the 'link' to the local auto-x guys.

I'm sure that a solution can be worked out for '08', if the 'powers' decide that we cause too much damage to the parking lot at ripken........

Can we say " Party At TOM'S"?????
