first post question

G'day,

This is my first post on this forum although I've been lurking around for a while.

I've been a fan of the SVX since they were first released and I remember trying in vain to convince a dealer to let me take a new one for a test drive. Since then I've test driven 3 or so but the price or condition always put me off. Now that their price has dropped below 10 grand I have started looking around for a nice, well looked after, low milage, unmodified example. I'm not new to Subarus, I currently have 4 Brumbys and an L series wagon, all in various stages of modification from extreme to almost stock. Have in the past owned a Liberty, a Vortex and a couple RX Turbos.

I've just finished reading the supercharging thread in mod mania and cannot believe the workmanship, time, dollars and dedication that have gone into hotrodding the EG33. I take my hat off to all those involved.

Now that I've got that out of the way, could someone tell me if there were any black SVX sold here in Aus? I have seen cars in ads that look black but are usually described differently. And is there more than one shade of grey? Because some look positively silver.

Which year should I be looking for? They sold here from 1992 until 1997 didn't they? Are they all the same specs. I realise they are all constant and all auto which is a big attraction for me.

Cheers,
Stuart

near the top of the page there is a link that reads "personal lockers." its to the right of the page, across from the large SVX logo at top. when you click on it, it will list all the users with lockers. find "berger" and click on it. That should be it

Hi Stuart

First and foremost, you are very welcome.

There is an Excel spreadsheet about available colours in the How-To section
HERE

If you scroll down you see information about right hand drive markets and Australia is included.

You will notice on the Australia right hand column a lot of question marks. This is because the compilers of the list do not have a lot of hard information such as dealer brochures to show what options were available Down Under.

The colours shown with squares were definitely available. In addition, the first option of the cars that were silver and had grey flanks, that was also available. [We must update this ]

Regards the later cars available for '96 and '97, your Australia market seems to mirror the Japanese market. I would expect because of this that you will have had the three main colours available on the cars that had all one colour, i.e. ones with no black roof or boot lid. These three available colours are Bordeaux [a purple or Burgundy shade] Polo Green [Bright Green Mica] and Bright Silver.

The last colour is probably the one you mention, it's only on 96 on cars. The earlier cars were all painted using the darker Liquid Silver.

Mechanically the cars are all basically the same throughout the life cycle 91-97. The only notable change, other than some gearbox improvements, would be the later cars are wired differently. Cars 91-95 [with a black roof] are going to be OBD I cars, and the 96-97 cars, the last 3 colours, will be OBD II in the diagnostics department.

I hope this helps

Joe

Stuart, regards the above statement, there is one factor you need to keep in mind. ALL of the development work done so far in supercharging cars etc, this work has been carried out on OBD I cars, the earlier models. If you are thinking of buying a car to modify the engine, it would be wise to avoid the OBD II cars, even though they are "newer"

Nobody has done any software development on the OBD II ECU.

So accordiing to the spreadsheet, black models were not sold here in Oz?
I could have sworn I'd seen some.

Thanks for the headsup on the software changes.
I'd thought that the later models would be more desirable but I will definately look for an OBD I now.

I had my heart set on black (and I've never owner a black car before) but that silver one of Bergers looks good too.

The spreadsheet is incomplete because of lack of information Stuart.

What the spreadsheet indicates with the little green squares, those we know for sure were available.

It looks like black was available and should be on there, it's just that we didn't have verbal assurance that they exist, or brochure information to show they were available. We will now mark black as available.

I love black also, I have a black with black leather seats. Just be aware if you are in a heavy sunshine area, you MUST have the aircon working in good condition. The interior gets really hot when parked in the sun.

You should take a hard look at Berger's car. It is sweet and the price looks right. It will save you money in the long run to buy a car that is well minded.
[OK, I'm biased. I have one that colour too ]

Joe

Update on 96-97 colours:

Here is an update based on information in one of Jamsvx's catalogues:

The available colours in Australia for the later one-coloured cars, the ones with OBD II are as follows:

Crimson Mica
Bright Green Mica
Bright Red
Bright Yellow.

Now, just so there is no confusion, I am willing to lay a bet that the colour shown here as "Crimson Mica" is actually what the US calls Bordeaux, code 487, and not the darker Claret from the early cars, code 265.

Bright Green Mica aka Polo Green is code 517

Bright Red is code 559

Bright Yellow is code 518

The Oz market seems to have got Bright Red in place of Bright Silver [406]

If someone in Australia has an all-over Bright Silver car, I would like to know about it, what year was it?

We will amend the spreadsheet to show this information and corrections shortly. I would like to hear from an Ebony [black 235] owner before we list that one as available. It can be mistaken for the very dark Graphite [222] colour on the road.

Joe

I will be interested to see if any aussie owners come forward with black/ebony cars.
No point trying to find something that does not exist.

Here is one on eBay that I thought was black but it is listed as metallic gun metal grey. It's a '92. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....6539&rd=1&rd=1

Berger,
I'll look forward to your new photos.
Will you put the genuine stereo back in?
And is yours Liquid Silver?
