Automatic to 5-6spd manual

How much to convert?
Who can do it?
Is it worth it?

I suggest you become familiar with the search function of this site. There's a lot of info here on the swap. How-to's, cost.......bascially everything.

I have searched the site and there is a lot of info regarding converting to a manual.
The problem is there doesn't seem to be a concensus on which conversion is the most practical, only ones based on personal preference.
Many of the members that have converted seem to have varying degrees of success.
I have to weigh the cost of a rebuild of the stock tranny ($3,500.00) with the cost of coverting to a manual but I don't want to convert unless I'm sure It's not going to lead to a whole new series of problems.

If you aren't going to race or anything just get a standard Legacy or Impreza tranny. They are relatively cheap and not too hard to come by.

You may develop a stall problem with an MT, but a software cure is being worked on, and from what I hear it really isn't a huge deal. Turn the key again and go. You can also get an auto.

The only things worth considering are the tranny strength, and gear size.

It doesn't get more practical than a standard Legacy standard. Easy to drive and parts are cheap, again, relatively.

Contact TomsSVX. Not only will he tell you what tranny is even worth using, he also does installs. If you cant make the drive to the other side of the country..All is still well. He makes kits with the custom fabricated crossmembers, shift linkages, and pedal boxes you'll need to undertake a manual conversion. Like everyone else though, I'd suggest taking a deeper look into some of the threads that come up in a search

My car's second (and current) auto tranny only has 40k on it, but I'm already saving cash towards a 5mt swap - I honestly just miss shifitng my own gears - The smallcar 5mt kit is about $3,000 and Tom quoted me $1,800 for to install. Is this the easiest/best/cheapest way to go?. Its still almost 5 grand worth, thats more than I paid for my car...
