replacing seatbelts with manuals

well i just finished the driver's side belt replacement
i used a 90 legacy to refit my 92 svx

all factory hardware
all safe
and only a bit of time ....maybe 90 minutes to do the re 'n re
the b pillar trim is off for now til i figure out how to make it fit neatly....

belts are the EXACT colour grey as the svx and buckle properly into the svx buckle...thus retaining the feature of having the belt move with the seat adjustment

on another thread there was comment about the large hole left in the carpet where the lap belt come up from the door sill.......

the easiest way to resolve this is to thread the new belt through the carpet AND the stock trim piece
then drill out the rivets holding the original lap-belt reel to its mounting plate
once this is done the plate can be re-installed to give u the stock location to attach the original trim to
easy!!

and to save a few ounces...u can trim off the excess metal from the plate since it is no longer a strength/safety piece...

i was going to take pics......my camera died!!

i THINK it just needs a new battery............i HOPE!!

easy enuff to do without pics though........for now i just tucked the shoulder belt up inside the console(bearing in mind i was running out of daylight....!!)

its easiest to remove the seat first for room to work..
as for the door-sill side of the seat....
remove door sill plate and front and rear side panels
remove trim that runs along door-top from b-a pillars
peel back carpet and remove lap belt reel
install legacy reel in the REAR bolt hole you just removed the original from
remove auto belt track asssembly from door frame, this will expose factory bolt hole for shoulder belt pivot anchor
install legacy belt pivot here (we will come back to this in a minute...)

carefully remove vapour barrier and cardboard side panel from side sheet metal...
install legacy reel in REAR bolt hole...its there but its back a short distance...
in the case of my donor belt, it anchors with the main bolt and then with a small bolt at the top of its assembly....THIS HOLE DOES NOT LINE UP WITH ANYTHING....but it is less of an issue....simply locate the best place to align the small hole with the svx sheet metal and drill a hole and install a bolt/nut/lockwasher

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i can ONLY speak of the belt that i used (1990 legacy L wagon)
it has a clear plastic window facing the front of the car...in it you will see a steel ball...this is the check ball that engages the reel lock!!!!!!!!!

the assembly MUST be aligned in such a manner that this mechism WORKS 100% PROPERLY!!!!!!!!!!

ie: AS VERTICAL AS POSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the reel assembly DOES fit behind the stock side panel without modification so when re-assembled, the interior looks stock

the belt passes up between the lower side panel and the b-pillar trim

the vapour barrier/cardboard side panel must be trimmed to fit round the reel assembly, and if a person wants to, a vapour barrier can be fabricated to incorporate the modifications...

now as for the pillar trim piece........

it must be modified to fit around the shoulder pivot anchor.....mine is broken anyway, so i am going to modify (ie CUT) it to fit around....this wont be pretty so if you want stock appearance, another method will have to be found....

i dont have an easy solution for the b-pillar trim issue........other than sourcing the correct belts/trim from the right SVX........

perhaps someone else has a good solution for this??

reassembly is the reverse of dismantling...

this leaves you with a normal belt and a flashing seatbelt light!!

i havent done so yet, but i am assuming i just have to create a jumper across the wires i un-plugged to complete the curcuit and turn off the light....

but by doing this, the light wont come on as its supposed to when you first start the car.......
SO BE AWARE OF THIS ISSUE

so as u can see, while it CAN be done easily enough, there ARE drawbacks to my methodology........

i dont care about the flashing light.....and i can live without the b-pillar trim being perfect

but i sure as HECK couldnt live with the motorized belt anymore!!!
