Rating: Status: Closed w/Fix Comments: No Comments Replies: 8 (View Replies) From: James N. Ellison Date: Apr 22, 2004 9:08 AM REPLY: Click here to reply to this FIX! 1992 Subaru SVX Engine: 3.3 L / 202 CID / 6 cyl / Gas / DOHC Fuel: Fuel Injection / SEFI Ignition: Distributorless Trans: 4-speed Automatic Transaxle (Electronic) Mileage: 120,000 mi Emissions: FED EMISSIONS VIN: JF1CX3536N Symptoms: Surge Occurs: Under load, On Accel More Info: Test results included below _____________________ ORIGINAL MESSAGE _____________________ This Subaru is kicking my butt. There are no codes stored. What happens is the vehicle surges when taking off from a stop at a very light throttle. When brake torquing engine in stall, surge will occur at about 1800 rpms at a steady throttle. O2 activity increase when this occurs but switches ok. Adding propane does not affect surging at all. Unpluggung Maf only made condition worse. Has anyone come across something like this? I have run out of ideas on where to go from here. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks Ken ___________________ TEST AND REPAIR DATA ___________________ TESTING AND RESULTS Tps - sweep tested good Maf - tested good O2's - tested good __________________________ UPDATE __________________________ I have unplugged the egr and vehicle still does it. Fuel pressure is at 30 psi @ idle and 35psi under load. This thing is weird though. It does not feel like a misfire at all it almost feels like a car that hits the rev limiter- but this car is cutting out spark or fuel. Under brake torque engine feels like it is going up and down maybe about 200 rpm and pretty rapidly. You can see this in a vacuum gauge. It flucuates rapidly between 8 & 9 inches of vacuum. I am considering checking the timing belt but not sure how involved of a job that is. Any pointers on checking these timing marks, is it fairly easy? ____________________________ FIX ___________________________ Sorry about the delay in posting this fix. I wanted to wait a couple of days to make sure that there were no further problems with this vehicle. I would like to thank everyone that took the time to offer me some ideas on this vehicle. I ended up checking fuel pressure (ok), cleaned fuel injectors (no help), retested egr operation (no problem found), and lastly i took the timing covers off to check belt timing (belt timing was right on the money (go figure). I was about to give up on this car until i stumbled across a website (subaru-svx.net). There was a technical question area on this website that i read though. I stumbled across a post that had a very similar complaint as mine. There was no posted fix on this vehicle but i did noticed that someone had suggested to take the ecm out and to break the black insulation around a noise suppressor inside the ecm. He commented that this was very common on these vehicles that when the mileage started reaching 120,000 miles that they start developing these hesistation/stumble complaints on acceleration. To make a long story short, because i was out of ideas on things to check i decided to give this a try. After doing this procedure the vehicle appears to be fixed, i drove it several times and have not gotten it to act up for me. The customer has had it for almost a week and i haven't heard back from her . Kind of a weird fix, but what the heck- i'll take it! Again, thank you all for the help you have given to me on this problem child. Ken James N. Ellison Owner/Technician Ellison Auto Clinic, Inc. Wauconda, Illinois, USA
