steering wheel rubs thighs

Ive had my svx since the beginning of summer and it hasnt become an issue until now but is there a reason that even when the drivers seat is in its lowest setting the steering wheel still rubs my thighs. Im a skinny person so its not my physical atributes and the steering wheel only seems to have 2 lock in areas low/really low. It seems that it should be able to lock in higher but it doesnt. Is something wrong?

You're using the wrong adjustment, the one your using is meant for people getting in and out of the car. You need to use the adjustment that is on the bottom center of the column.

Look underneath the steering wheel on the bottom side of the column and you will see a lever that pulls out. THAT is the steering wheel adjustment lever. Adjust the steering wheel until it is in a comfortable position and then push the lever back into place. The lever on the side of the column makes the wheel swing away to ease entry into the car. Sorry that you've been miserable with your driving position so long, but this happens to lots of new SVX owners. I once stopped to look at an SVX on a used car lot and was told that it was difficult to drive because the steering wheel adjustment gear was broken. They said that a new part was on order and offered to sell me the car at a slightly reduced price if I wanted it as-is. I already owned an SVX at the time and laughed, went over and set the wheel for them and drove off while they were standing with their mouths open.

LOL! So did you buy it at the reduced price as-is?

The adjustment is a little tough to find when you don't know about it. Heck, I forgot how to adjust it after I simply hadn't done it in a year or two... I was thouroughly confused for 15 minutes.

Reach way way below the steering wheel there is a little lever that will move the steering wheel and lock it into place. Just be careful when you pull it you dont have your head too close, i made that mistake the first time i pulled it and got hit in the teeth.

Does anyone use their tilt knob? I use mine if i'm wearing heels with an outfit so i can change into tennis shoes to drive and back into my heels without anyone getting to see the lovely look of a miniskirt and tennis shoes but thats it. And occasionally if i need to write something for someone i'll tip it to make a little desk. It always freaks ppl out when i do that!

I actually prefer it at that setting and have to pop the wheel up via the release whenever I get into or out of the car.

If you tried all 3 adjusters and it doesn't go where you want, it's broked.

I've forgot about it too. I start to get angry and then it all comes back. The release is real nifty for sliding out of the car, but I usually just squeeze under it. However, over time I've found that it really destroys the cover.

I sure knew these settings before I bought my first one, even the little winter/summer mode button...etc

Back to 14yrs ago, our cars already had tilt/telescope features.

Try moving the steering wheel back to its closest position to the dash, then adjust the up/down with the under-column lever. It should work. Lock it in the up/down position you want then use the telescope to bring it toward your body to a comfortable postion.

I decided to move mine today and cant get it comfortable anywhere. I tried for 20 minutes but no matter what i do it doesnt feel right (and i fooled with my seat so its not comfortable anymore either ).

I read my owners manual the day i got my car so i knew alot of the tricks too. Dont you guys read? I also got that dvd that was on ebay around Christmas, i learned more from that video than you would believe.

I assume the steering wheel position was NOT comfortable before you made an effort to change it. Here is what I would recommend. First, set the seat to dash ratio appropriately for your stature. Since the pedals will not move you must first adjust fore and aft to situate yourself properly to utilize the brake and accelerator pedals. Once fore & aft are properly set, adjust your driver seat up and down to the proper height for you. Then set the rake of the seat cushion and back to a comfortable position. Be careful that the leading edge of the seat cushion does not put undue pressure on the back of your legs, uncomfortable on long drives. Now, readjust your fore & aft to compensate for other adjustments you just made. Now you are ready to set your steering wheel. I'd begin by setting it as far away from you as you can reach with your arms straight out. Set its up-down position. Now, slowly bring the wheel toward you until your elbows bend, then move it no more than three inches closer to your body. This should result in a near-perfect driving position where you can comfortably place both hands on the wheel near the 10 and 2 o'clock positions. For everyday driving and for easy entry and egress, this is the best driving position. For long trips, try moving your steering wheel two inches closer to your body. This will further relax the muscles of your arms and make for less tiring driving over time. Best wishes.
Preston
