Adjustable Headrest? (and "what would you pay for...?")

Greetings all.

I am considering purchasing a '92 SVX. I'm currently driving a '90 Legacy wagon, so it's a big step up. I found this car which has surprisingly low milage on it, within walking distance from my house:

When i got in, i noticed that the headrest didn't seem to adjust when compared to my Legacy. It neither tilted or moved vertically. So my question is: Is it supposed to be adjustable or am i missing something? If it isn't adjustable, are there any 3rd party headrests i could buy that would be adjustable? This is a fairly important part of the driving experience i think. Otherwise i get neck strain and accompanying headaches on longer trips.

My other question is: what would you pay for the above car? The owner is offering it for $5000 (even though it's listed online for $6000). Is that fair? Kelly Blue Book lists it for about $5000 but i wanted your guys' imput before i make an official offer. Besides what's listed, this is also the "Touring" edition (i think. At least the steering felt like it)

The story behind the car is that it used to belong to an older woman who owned it from the time it was new. It was her "secondary" car and she rode most of the time with her husband in their Lincoln. As such, it's very low milage and in pretty good condition. The man i am getting it from bought the car off her and rebuilt the transmission and few other things on the car and is now selling it to make a small profit. He would rather work on a hotrod sort of car instead of this one. There are a few minor scratches under the headlights and some average interior ware, but nothing serious. I think this is a good buy, even at $5000 (given the low milage), but if i can pay less, i certainly would like to ;-)

If it were you, what would you offer?

Welcome to the site. I would offer $4500 for it and if you need to go as high as $5000, that might be a good price as well. I would want to know a little more about it. How is the tranny, what maintenance has been done (60K service etc). You can go to the How-To Docs and find What to look for in a Used SVX

The head rest will move up and down, but will not click forward or back.

The front headrests on both my 92 pearlie and 96 Polo tilted forward and back. They may be stiff, but if you pull hard enough on the top of the headrest it will move.

When in the farthest back position, it is on the same plane as the seat back. If you pull it forward, the top of the headrest tilts toward the front of the car.

Check out page 2-13 of the 92 owner's manual.

So there is no mechanical buttons or levers that need pulling in order to adjust the headrest, just yank? Do you know if this is true of all of the 92's?

Thanks for the help. But now i'm getting conflicting info

Has anyone ever got some kind of fancy-schmancy custom headrest, or is such a thing even made? Google does not seem to help much on the topic.

No buttons or levers. Just pull forward. It may be stiff, especially if they have not been adjusted for awhile (if ever)

Every SVX from 92 to 97 adjusts this way. Trust me on this. My 92 and my 96 have been adjusted as I mentioned. Check ot the page 2-13, the "Before Driving Your Vehicle" section of your 92 owner's manual, If you don't have one, maybe someone here will substantiate what it says.

Believe me on this. I do not post erroneous information on the Network.

Does this sound a little strange?

A little old lady drove this as her second car and the transmission had to be rebuilt with less than 62,900 miles?

Talk about a hotrod granny!

Correct - they all do it. The best way to adjust it I have found is while sitting in the seat put your hands behind your head and grab the headrest and pull forward.

No, not strange. I remember reports of transmissions failing within 15000.

If this were any other car, i'd be very suspicious as well, but the transmission on this car is, from what i've researched, one of the most common mechanical failings.

I've looked under the hood and driven the car. The engine is unusually clean and it runs very smooth. It has some cosmetic personality flaws, but it runs really great. I've never hit the speed limit so fast :-)
