Refer to this thread for production numbers:
http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=27471 However, the build number is from the factory and will represent worldwide production (including manufacturer and press vehicles that are never sold). -Chike

The check digit is used to verify the VIN is valid and not fake.

your website (and everything else i've seen for teh svx) always show the 6th digit to be a "3" for 3.3L, but the 97s (and i think 96s) are an "8". do you know why this is different? i am asking this, because i was looking in auto trader at SVXs and noticed some other 97 LSi models with a different check digit than mine. at first look, they all seemed to be "0", but i found one with an "X". mine, however, is a "9". this reminded me of when i tried to run a carfax of my car before i bought it and came up empty handed. finally, when one registers a car in colorado, the original taxable value of the car is listed on your registration. this amount is always 85% of original msrp. the orignal taxable value of my 97 LSi calculates out to be exactly $16,000. i'm sure my car has an invalid VIN.
