What's the code, if any, for the VSS1 ?

Thx !
you're reading the chart for the ECU (blinking CE light).

32 & 33 are from the TCU error codes (blinking power light).

OK, next question... How do I check that OR if the POWER light flashes 16 times (mine does). That is how you know ?

Is ther a way to get codes from the TCU ???

The presence of the "Power" light on the lower dash panel blinking on/off 16 times at half-second intervals immediately after engine start-up indicates the TCU has recorded an error in the electronic system of the transmission. To discover the stored code, one must perform a sequence of steps to get the TCU in its diagnostic mode. Once in the diagnostic mode, the light will blink in a combination of long and/or short blinks, with a long blink = 10, short blink = 1. For example, if you observe 2 long blinks followed by three short blinks, that implies a code of 23. The code will either repeat, or display additional errors stored, until the ignition is turned off. The following method is used to enter the diagnostic mode for existing and previously recorded problems. Clearing the memory of the TCU is not supported, as the code is actually stored in the ECU memory.

To perform the self-diagnosis test for existing problems:
Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
Turn ignition switch OFF.
Move selector lever to “D” and turn manual switch ON.
Turn ignition switch ON.
Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch OFF.
Move selector level to "2" and turn manual switch ON.
Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch OFF.
Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.

To perform the test for previous (stored) problems:
Warm up engine by driving at speeds greater than 12mph.
Stop vehicle and turn ignition switch OFF.
Turn ignition switch ON and make sure POWER indicator lamp comes on.
Turn ignition switch OFF.
Move selector lever to "1" and turn manual switch ON.
Turn ignition switch ON.
Move selector lever to "2" and turn manual switch OFF.
Move selector lever to "3" and turn manual switch ON.
Move selector lever to "D" and turn manual switch OFF.
Partially depress accelerator pedal (to turn idle switch off).
Check code as displayed on POWER light. Blinking once every 1/4sec is normal.

TCU Error Code Table
Trouble Code Item
11 Duty solenoid A
12 Duty solenoid B
13 Shift solenoid 3
14 Shift solenoid 2
15 Shift solenoid 1
21 ATF temp sensor
22 Atmospheric sensor
23 Engine revolution signal
24 Duty solenoid C
31 Throttle sensor
32 Vehicle speed sensor 1
33 Vehicle speed sensor 2

if you want to know how to check component to verify the error code, look in my locker for part 1 of the tranny manual

My power light blinked 16 times for about 2 months... then stopped (this is after I unplugged my resistor)

Is there still a code in the TCU or did the code cycle out?\

Thanks.
Patrick.

yes, there is still a code unless the ECU has been reset (TCU codes are actually stored in a part of the ECU memory); but, I wonder if that's what you're really asking...

have you plugged the resistor back in? The TCU sets the blinking light for issues it found during the previous run/stop period. After a restart the code is moved into the previously stored code area and the blinking stops - unless the problem wasn't fixed or a new one occurred during the last run cycle.

if you haven't plugged it back in, does the light illuminate at all when you first start (burnt out bulb?).

A year or so ago I drove for a while without the resistor and the light never failed to do it's "blinking" thing on start-up - but there may be a limit, I just don't know.

It WAS the VSS (I only have 1)

I don't get a code for it because it doesn't have another VSS to compare to. I would have got a code if I was driving down the highway because the engine is reading high RPMS (>1500RPM) for a certain amount of time but no speed.

Turns out the VSS from my old 4EAT works on the 2002 WRX tranny even though they have a physically different shape.

It must have been an electronic issue as we could not find anything physically wrong with the speed sensor itself.

not nessecarily true. My vss went in the 5mt and today i got a new one from Jesse and it works great now. Coincidental about the 5mt through(may need a thorough investigation... Not it!!), i was using my rpm to gauge speed since i bought it in october.

That's weird. It must have quit when patrickb had it. Worked fine for me.

I believe the problem to be an electrical issue with the VSS itself.

OK here is my situation. Speedo doesn't work. Have not read the codes manually. Have a new VSS1 I can install. Will I potentially damage the car driving 100 miles each way on dry roads to a location where I can pick up Earl's Select Tool if it turns out to be the VSS2?

Or am I just driving without an operating speedo?
