Re: How Long do you warm up your car?

At the end of the school day I start my car from the other end of hte parking lot (it will reach as long as I can see it even in the distance) and I walk slowly and then I get to the car. I pull away as long as my RPM reaches 1000 or below (average of 5 minutes of warming up)

What do you guys do?
3-4 mins in the summer and 5-6 mins in the winter... your case is approx the same as mine.

Well, I don't have an SVX, but I can tell you that in the camaro, I usually let it sit until the rpms are at about 600 (about 5-10 seconds). I never drive that car hard at all though, so it's not that big of a deal to me. On the other hand, my rx-7 has a built in accellerated warm-up system. When the car is cold, when you start it, it immediatly revs the car to 3k for about 20-30 seconds, to get the oil flowing and warmed up. Then it goes down to 1500 until the coolant is warm enough to melt the termal pellet that acts as a tstat. Considering the engine is multiple layers of aluminum and iron, I don't go above 2-2.5k until it's fully warmed up. I don't need any leaks out of it

I like to let it warm up to operating temps because I always drive like a bandit.

You'll learn real fast that no warm-up time will cut your engines lifespan just as quickly as running it out of oil will if you live here. It's all a big geography thing, but I can assure you a short warm up period anywhere in the world will do VERY LITTLE long term damage to your engine.

just wait till the temperature arrow gets to the first white line of the "C" indicator.

PS: your avatar's pic is hotter than mine's (no hard feelings for all the svx enthusiasts, but I love chics !!! )

Slightly OT...

But I was looking for more info on this warm up issue and came across an article in a book about the '49 Buick Roadmaster. Ya see, the ignition switch was connected to the gas pedal, so you had to put your foot to the floor and keep it there in order to start the engine. It would "always start with a roar." No kidding. I'm still trying to figure out if that was a marketing gimmick, or a necessary evil of the Fireball Straight-8. Kinda makes you appreciate fuel injection....

p.s. I usually warm her up for a minute while finding an appropriate radio station or CD, then go easy on her 'till she reaches operating temperature...C'mon fellas, its the same technique for the ladies

In the Legacy (2.2) I am usually rolling before the Seatbelt chime stops. As soon as I get out of the driveway, I am driving her like Benebob's Bandit. She has over 200k on her and still runs as nice as she did when I got her with 40k. The only time she gets any warm up time is if I have to scrape the windows.

The SVX I usually have moving within 20 seconds or so of start up, but then I don't push her too hard for few minutes.

The Brat requires a few minutes of "Pedal Massage" until all is good.

Would that be clutch pedal massage replacing any excercise regiment? That pedal is HORRIBLE!

Well now that it is 30f in the morning up here in the Great White North I idle for 30seconds, drive lightly until the engine hits operating temp. I always wondered why my tranny would not kick into 4th for a while driving to work but now I know. You learn something new everyday!

Thanks

Is it just me or does it take the svx longer to get to the middle temperature than most cars?

Ive noticed that all older cars tend to warm up slower. My moms 98 camry warms up fully in 5 minutes....the 02 accord warms up to full opp temp in 2 minutes!...my SVX takes about 6 or 7 . And it also does that rev thing when i start it and the rpms jump up and come down and it almost stalls when when the engine is really cold .

30! Way up north! Must be nice!

Penny really hates the cold. She lives in the heated garage overnight, but has to be parked outside all day. And we haven't gotten above 25 for the past week, so it's bad. I let her warm for a couple minutes then go. She balks something awful. And I make sure not to turn the cabin heat on until the engine's warmed up. Hard cold leather seats aren't very comfortable.
