Formal SVX Organization
To J. W. Moore, J. Devine, & R. Johnson, et al,
All of the messages to/from the formal SVX organization are clogging up my e-mail system. About half of the e-mails have viruses. This has got to stop or I will leave the formalized SVX organization. I have had to use this forum because I deleted all the e-mails to stop all viruses. Please , please sop sending e-mails to everyone . When replying please do not reply to everyone, just to the sender. Thanks Larry Singer. |

Larry of three I's:
I've been receiving the same e-mails, no viruses at all. I can't see how there'd be a virus, since there's no attachment on it anyways. The way a list server works is that every single person gets every single message. Those that write a message sends it to the list server address, and it then sends the message out to all the recipients. If you want the messages to stop, I'm afraid you'll have to opt out of the list server. But again, I haven't seen any viruses in the e-mails I've received so far... VK |

Here's the deal, Lar.
I just got shed of the Badtrans virus and discovered that it's somewhat ingenious in the way it propagates.
If you have recently sent a message to the organization, and someone on the organization has the virus it (Badtrans) will 'reply' to you with the virus. It actually doesn't go to the people in your address book, but 'replies' to messages in your Inbox. A reply to a message that you recently sent is probably more likely to be opened, right? (I know, I did it - yeah - STUPID! ) It happens to be a real good excuse to keep your Inbox and Deleted Items box cleaned out. Symantec has a free clean-up tool here: http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ Best of luck - hopefully this one will be gone soon (but watch out for W32Aliz.worm). Steve

I haven't received any viruses either. Like Victor, I'm puzzled. Of course, I refuse to use Outlook on my home machine, since it is the target of most of the "nasty bugs" anyway.
Larry, I'll make sure you get no more e-mails from me. Gonna kinda be hard to hold a discussion amongst us without your input, though.

Badtrans
virus[worm] has a ring to it for SVX people.
I got it in my machine from SVX messages, but Norton AV software contained it. Did not realise all messages went to everybody, so using "reply all" is a bad idea. I will stop using that reply mode, sorry Larry for the duplication. If whomever in the SVX e-group who originally got the Badtrans infection does not clean up his/her system, it will continue to forward crap to everybody, and will replicate from any machine not using protection. It is important that everybody on a mailing list or using a public website has updated virus protection. Joe

Also if you e-mail in "Plain Text" opposed to "HTML" (which is mostly what I recieving in the mailing list) this will stop alot of the viruses.
Just my preventitive 2 cents,

You can e-mail me directly not thru the server. I have never gotten a virus from a one of your direct e-mail. I'm affraid I must use Outlook. It's my company's e-mail system. I use the company's system in office/home because their firewall protects me from viruses. They continually update their Norton software. Larry |

As long as my address book was cleaned out - (I deleted everything when I had the virus so that I wouldn't contaminate the world), and there was nothing in my Inbox or Deleted Items box, I disabled NAV from Outlook and used MS's security tool. It worked! The virus came in (from Chicago this time) and Outlook not only disabled it, but deleted it completely - without any anti-virus protection enabled. I was impressed! To do this in Outlook Inbox: Tools - Options - Security tab Check both boxes under Anti-virus protection, ie: X Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me. X Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. It might not work for everything, but it doesn't hoit. Oh yeah, I have '98 SE. I don't know if it applies to any other OS. Steve

<<Tools - Options - Security tab
Check both boxes under Anti-virus protection, ie: X Warn me when other applications try to send mail as me. X Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. >> Outlook 98 and 2000 have security updates to protect it from being infected and spreading viruses. They block any program from accessing you address book generating mail or sending mail. It should be on everyone's machines that use Outlook. http://office.microsoft.com/download.../out2ksec.aspx I didn't even realize I was getting virused until I looked at my log and saw they were getting cleaned. I guess this damn computer thingy is working like it should. Doug
