My shaft has stiff joints.
The propeller shaft, drive shaft, has stiff U-joints, that is.
Any idea how long they will last?

Okay Doug not long. The shaft is still free to move in and out. It's just that when I hold in the hand and and try some gyrations that it feels notchey at the joints. So you think the lubricant is all dried up inside? I guess after all that action in the past 180k miles it's pretty hard, the grease that is.
So. Ah. Yes. I would like to trade. Please send me your drive shaft and I'll use it for the next 10 years and then I'll send it back to you with mine. So how much for a new drive shaft assembly? I may be looking at new front exhaust pipes and what the heck since the rack is original I might as well do that while I got everything apart and up on JACK STANDS.

So men the message here is this
don't get old. Your shaft and joints get stiff and are expensive to replace, welding only cures part of the problem and it requires the ends to be cut off

Doug, I am thinking about injecting some grease or oil or something into the rubber seal on the u-joints with a needle. That's a lot of money for the drive shaft. But then again it last a long time ~ 10 years 200k miles. The exhaust has also lasted a long time. Maybe the replacement exhaust is worth the money too. How about the rear diff? Most likely needs a rebuild to reduce backlash. I changed the fluid in mine recently. It was changed about 100k ago and I was surprised that it was sort of gray looking. I'll have to change it more often.
So at about 200k replace the exhaust, propeller shaft, rack and and and and what else?

Re the suggestion of injecting grease/oil.
I have had good results and saved money and effort through greasing CV joinjts said to be US. Can you get grease in under the edge off the boot, after removing any attaching clip, using a gun or syringe ? Well worth a try. Randy, I trust you have a tool in hand to remove your restraints. Meantime enjoy !

Ya what he said. The joints are ussually stiff if you try to move them around alot, but if you think about it our shafts don't move around alot like in a strait axle car. The joints should work fine for a long time still, they don't really have to move that much anyway.
