IMO people that say they never race aren't being completely *ahem* honest, maybe you never lined up with another cat or went for a rolling race...but c'mon you've never just wanted to see who was faster or just got "played" with another car.
AS far as the beater goes my first car was a brown lebaron and I beat that car bad , drove it through corn fields, jumped train tracks (it talked so i figured it must be realated to KIT), drove it down a set of steps, tested it several times to see how fast it would go in reverse, and srove it down a set of steps. I took a turn it it so fast that the speaker box in the trunk came loos and dented the car from the inside out, even got the front wheel drive to fishtail. Everyone needs a good beater in their life.

My freinds mother had a Labaron, took it to Bush Gardens and it got flooded to the bottom of the seats. The damn thing wouldn't stop talking. There is an electrical malfunction, A door is ajar, Washer fluid is low, Please buckle seat belts, all the way home.
I hate talking cars.

Ok, I will admit to "playing" a couple of times, but nothing along the lines of a predetermined race, or a drag race at a light. Strictly highway if anything at all.
