fusible link wire size?

So my alternator went nuts and as a result my fusible link burned up. No one seems to have the SVX fusbile link in stock, but at various auto parts stores you can buy fusible link wires and connectors. Does anyone know what a good AWG size would be for making my own fusible link?

Thanks!

Have you considered replacing the fusible link with a real fuse? An ANL will do the trick, but fusible links are cheaper. If they have a relationship between size and amperage I'd get the appropriate size for an 80-100 amp fusible link. I guess whoever it is at the auto parts store should be able to help.

A general rule of thumb is that the fusible link should be 4 AWG units smaller than whatever it's protecting. So, for a 12 gauge Alternator wire (it might be 10) a 16 gauge fusible link would be fine.

Awesome, I'll see what I can do when I get my alternator back tomorrow.

Thanks!

Hello, if you PM me your address I will send you a fusible link. I have a few extra ones that I got at salvage yards. If there are any salvage yards in your area you can pick one up yourself. All Subaru's should have one that will work on your car.

Re: fusible link wire size?

18 gauge = 1.0 mm
16 gauge = 1.2 mm
14 gauge = 1.6 mm

SVX uses a 1.5 mm fusible link
A 16 gauge fusible link will work fine.

Thumbs up Re: fusible link wire size?

A 15 year resurrection of a thread. That must be a record.
Good info though.

The length of the wire is an important factor and in general the shorter the wire the quicker it will melt and open the protected circuit. It is generally stated that this should not exceed nine inches.

The blowing of the fuse link, i.e. the melting of the wire, constitutes a severe fire hazard which must be taken into account and protected against.

Re: fusible link wire size?

Great info. My car is a sitting duck since my fusible link blew. Guess I have to try to make my own.
