Wheel balance weights
I feel kind of dumb asking this, but what is the best way to remove the wheel balance weight so that they can be reused?

Stick-on or clip?

Re: Wheel balance weights
Clip on. I see there is a special tool for them, but I am guessing they can be removed other ways. I want to mark the wheels then put them back on.

Re: Wheel balance weights
Why are you wanting to remove them? You said "to mark the wheels and put them back on" I'm assuming you're doing some sort of tire repair, or something?

Re: Wheel balance weights
Pretty sure wheel weight hammers are pretty cheap. It's the proper tool.
(assuming you're talking about the hammer-on outside weights and not the stick-ons.) |

Re: Wheel balance weights
Or painting them.
The wheel weight pliers make it super easy (I should know, worked in tire shops for 3 or 4 years). I've honestly never had to remove a weight without that tool though. If the tire's off it's easy, just get a screwdriver against the back of the tab and give it a few taps with a hammer. With the tire on I'm having a hard time imagining something that doesn't also risk scratching the wheel. Needle nose pliers perhaps, or maybe the screwdriver/hammer trick.

Needle nose pliers will be the easiest without having the correct pliers. It's gonna be a pain though.

Re: Wheel balance weights
In that case I'll order the tool, and yes they are being removed for painting.

Re: Wheel balance weights
If you are painting the wheels, putting the weights back on is going to scratch the paint. I would have them rebalanced with stick ons on the back side out of site.
Also if you ever drive it in the winter nasty corrosion sets up between the rim and weights because of the dissimilar metals. Last edited by Blacky; 07-09-2012 at 05:28 AM. |

Re: Wheel balance weights
The weights are on the back side of the wheels or else I would get them rebalanced.

Re: Wheel balance weights
I do this too when I am at a shop having my tires mounted. Hate looking at those ugly things.
