Re: Alternatives for 4EAT (4.44)

As processengr said the into second shift is harsh.
(Although I like a firm shift.)

Linking to a propper wrightup is not the same as actually writing one.

The "How to." is in my signature.

Chuckls is showing a way to fix/remedy the mathmaticaly resultant speedometer error by explaining, in picture form, a 4.44 SVX with a 5.5% taller set of tires.
(Speedometers should read about 5.5% high unless you install taller tires.)
NOTE; This is for 4.44s only!!!!!!!!!

Nate is correct about the Forester, LEGACY Outback, LEGACY GT,
Impreza 2.5 RS, and perhaps the LEGACY LSI.

When I source a 4.44, I get it from wrecking yards that I know and trust.
A licenced business is required to be forthcoming in their description of a product.

Others can say what they want.

Re: Alternatives for 4EAT (4.44)

In regards to the rear differential, the LSD can be swapped as stated below, but you can also install a non LSD one and use 2 right axles. I think it is the right one, I can't quite remember, but my understanding is that doing the non LSD is easier, but performance wise the LSD is the better option. Maybe some one can elaborate or correct me, my knowledge is a bit limited.

Re: Alternatives for 4EAT (4.44)

My turbo charged SVX has had a 4.444 (-96 Outback 2.5) for the last ten years.... Since the original tranny failed, there's a converter from the Outback.... the stall speed is way too high for a turbo engine @ 3200rpm. 2300 would be great, I miss the torque peak....

I installed a valve body from Michael and just this week a QC from Harvey - the box works pretty good. The QC actually cut upshift times by 50%, feels very, very good - I will post g-value comparison later. At the moment I run a stock TCU.

The inly thing is the transfer clutch - I need to decide whether to try and find a VTD tail section or just refresh the MPT and transfer valve. As it is the MPT chatters quite a bit before it grabs.... slow to engage.

The rear end was swapped for an open one in 2001, I have a Quaife Torsen carrier ordered and ready be to be picked up . I hope to find some time during X-mas to install it.

With the torque available even at only 5PSI the gearing does feel a bit short.... traction is limiting acceleration even in second.

Kind regards,

Tapani

Re: Alternatives for 4EAT (4.44)

You can use a TQ from an SVX in any 4EAT, BUT,
you CAN NOT use a 4.44 TQ with a stock SVX trans.

Could you please elaborate on this? Which TCs are interchangable and what are the issues? Could a phase 2 TC (from a 2002 3.0 Outback for example) be swapped in a 1996 4.444 from a 2.5 Outback? I think there was a change in 1997 in the TC design too.

Thanks, this is of interest to me - I need a TC with 2300-2500 rpm stall speed with 300 lbft of torque for the -96 4.444 tranny.

I have only used Phase 1 TQs.

The SVX TQs are applicable in all 4EAT SVX Phase 1 transmission swaps.

An SVX, OR 4.44 TQ can be used with a 4.44, BUT a 4.44 TQ will fail if used in a stock SVX install.

It will work for a while, but is not up to the task.

The stall speed is dependant on HP.

Yes, I said that!

Re: Alternatives for 4EAT (4.44)

Would an ATX from an Impreza 2.5RS 2000 work? (transmission code TZ1A2ZJEAA)

PS: I'm asking because the part number isn't one that would match the criteria stated in the thread I refer to, but svxfiles's reply suggests that 2.5RS trannies might work).

Phase 1 4EATs.
If it has a spin on filter on the left side of the trans it will not work with our wiring.

I haven't seen the transmission... I don't know if it has a spin on filter on the side. I'm just browsing some local ads.
